First Crash in 50 years - Could have been much worse! ATGATT for the win!

'23 Suzuki DL800DE Adv "Suzy"
My friend and riding partner, Scott, and I took a little ride on a 60f degree January day to put some miles on his brand new, picked it up yesterday, '25 BMW R1300 GSA. On our way home coming through Rapid City on Mt Rushmore Rd. I was following doing the 35mph speed limit. Next thing I know I was talking to the EMTs standing on the sidewalk.
I'm in the hospital for observation overnight with two broken ribs, a slight pneumothorax (punctured right lung). Fentanyl is some good stuff 🥴. ATGATT for the win, jacket has a hole in the chest, pants survived, gloves, no marks, Helmet is a goner.

The Gray Ghost is likely Toast as the cop, also a rider, told me he thought the steering head was broken, and there was oil from somewhere all over the ground.

Scott also went down, I think I hit his rear wheel, but was able to ride his bike to the hospital and then home. Slight cosmetic damage he says.

I don't recommend this to anyone!

Hoping to be able to do our planned ride in AZ NM first week of March, ribs will be the driving factor.

Holy crap! Yeppers on the ATGATT. I'm a firm believer. Hoping your recovery goes well and quickly. 🙏 That's some serious looking damage to your bike. Any idea of what happened?

Airplanes and motorcycles, any landing you walk away from was .. well, at least good enough. Ya must have been doing something right.

Very sorry for your pain, and the damaged bike. Hope ya both get back up to speed quickly. God bless!

Yikes! Hope you heal quickly and well! Kudos on having ATGATT, and I hope you are able to sort out the bike and piece together what happened, for the same reason the FAA spends time doing that—to help others avoid or prevent a similar occurrence.

Best,
DeVern

Glad you survived and hope you heal quickly and completely. Maybe Scott will be able to fill in some of the details for you later.

A great reminder of what motorcycle riders should and need to do and prepare for when riding, especially nowadays.
Heal fast.

Wow, looking at your bike I am glad to hear you walked away from this one. Thankfully you fared much better than the bike. ATGATT works and you are living proof. Heal quick, and let us know more about the accident when you yourself know more. Take care, John.

Looks like something fell out of the sky and landed on him :)
FTFY ;) Some very odd autocorrect happening there, Lee!

John, happy to hear you are still breathing, and on the mend. Amazing how much can happen at 35 mph, isn't it? You can fly about 25 feet if launched in a high-side...

Bike is totaled for sure. You’re not and I’m so glad you’re still here with us and thank god you were gear and it all went right.

take care of yourself and ride safe!

Did the telelever come apart? Hard to tell from the photo if the stanchions are still connected at the top. The design was strengthened a few years ago to avoid spontaneous disassembly at the crimp, but I have not heard of any problems since.

So is there any more intel on the who, what, when, where, why and how this happened yet? Glad to read the OP is okay, we're all wondering if there's any more news on details of the crash.

Heal well and soon
