2024 National Rally: REDMOND Oregon

You got to remember Redmond is on what's called the high plateau at an elevation of 3100' east of the mountains so she gets nippy at times but humidity is low.

My house in the Texas Big Bend just north of Big Bebd Nationbal Park is at exactly 3,600 feet. Our house in Kansas is at 900 feet. I understand elevation.

In. this morning's newspaper a story on the front page upset me no end. It seems the state senate has sent a bill to the governor that would strike down Oregon's no self serve gasoline station law which would make New Jersey the only state that doesn't allow self serve gas. I read this and got instantly pissed off! I have no doubt the governor will sign this bill. No doubt it will make the tourists especially from you know where happy as pigs in &%$#. The average age in the town I live in is 63 with many residents way beyond this age and the weather in winter can be not pleasant as in wet and cold. For these folks getting out of the car to figure out a gas pump is not going to be pretty. At present the attendant will start the pump then hand the gas dispenser to the motorcyclist and let him/her pump their own fuel so no problem but to allow the average motorist to do this makes no sense to me as in it's just not necessary to reinvent this wheel.

Around here, there have always been “full serve” stations for those that can’t or don’t want to pump their own gas. The cost of gasoline has always been higher at these stations (mostly).
Most stations have a canopy for reasonable weather protection from rain/snow. I remember a sticker on the gas pump at one time that an attendant would help those that needed it but never have seen it.

Here in CA, if someone needs help at the pump, the attendant will come out and help them without charge.

I've seen it a few times.

Could we please keep this thread on the topic in the header and less about your dislike of all things even remotely connected to California, growth, change, etc?

My concern with Redmond is complicated. I dislike what I have been able to find with hotel pricing (gouging) and availability, so decided - no problem - we will just camp. Then I looked at this year's current weather in early June and find overnight lows mostly in the low 40s and upper thirties, with one night forecast to be below freezing at 31F. I have been to both prior Redmond rallies and don't recall any temperature issues camping - but - but - those were both in July. Be prepared campers. Be prepared!

Paul, thanks for the heads up regarding Oregon’s temperatures I always take my sleeping bag rated to 32F but for this trip I’ll also pack a fleece liner (that I had made years ago) and my very heavy hoodie that certainly came in handy during the rather brisk northern Ontario mornings that I awoke to last summer. Fortunately without my liner, my sleeping bag kept me toasty but what a shock when leaving the tent. :D

Heck if the temps are that cool and hotels that expensive I am decide to rough it too!

The registration discount email came out a couple days ago but there is nothing in there about rv parking. Any idea when that will be known?

RV map and registration will be separate this year. We’re targeting August 1 as a release date for RV registration. Anyone already registered will be notified first by email and then released to the general membership.

It’s currently 6am in Redmond.

And the temperature is 48 degrees, clear skies.

Today is one week later than next year’s Rally.

I can barely wait to be back there.

The scenery from the Rally grounds towards the mountain range in the mornings is incredible.

We reserved a backup hotel just in case, but will cancel and camp if conditions are good. We also signed up for the $50 special.

I’m still not sure how we’re going to get there. Glenlivet is at an age where hot and muggy conditions take a lot out of him, conditions we’re likely to encounter between our home in Vermont and the rally site. We might take our Nissan Xterra and spend a month exploring the southwest backcountry before driving north to Oregon. Or we might tow to somewhere in the SW, leave the sidecar to explore in the SUV for a month, then leave the Xterra and sidecar up the coast to the rally before towing back home.

Are there plans to have an Overland area again?

Oregon Self Service Gas to be Permitted

Oregon Finally Legalizes Pumping Your Own Gas After 72 Years

Oregon will prohibit gas stations from charging more for full-service fuel.

Chris RosalesPUBLISHED Jun 24, 2023 8:30 PM EDT
After a 72-year reign, Oregon’s self-service gas prohibition has been decisively repealed in the state Senate. Though there have been intermediate years and exceptions, notably in rural counties in 2017, and during wildfires or heatwaves since 2020. House Bill 2426 as proposed would require gas stations to staff half of the available pumps, but allows the other half to be self-service.
According to a report from The Oregonian, fuel companies have long pushed for the change due to staffing shortages. The Northwest Grocery Association, an advocate for retail and food suppliers, claims that jobs won’t be lost because half of gas pumps are already closed due to understaffing. The provision in the bill to staff half of pumps reflects this statistic, effectively reopening gas stations that are understaffed.

Full-service gas stations are a relic of the past, from a time when adding fuel by yourself was dangerous and prohibited by state fire codes, but also inconvenient. One of the first self-service gas stations opened in 1947 in Los Angeles and started a change that caught strongly in the ‘70s. From then, self-service became the new normal, and when pay-at-the-pump proliferated in the ‘80s with the rise of credit cards. From then, there have been staunch holdouts of full-service gas stations, the most famous of which is New Jersey. Oregon was the other.

Oregon’s bill crucially prevents stations from charging more for a full-service pump than a self-service, which will effectively eliminate full-service pumps. The economic advantage of self-serve, saving money for the owners of the stations, will shift legislative future pressure surrounding full-service stations. Not to mention, Oregon drivers that would prefer to save time by simply pulling up to an empty pump rather than waiting in line for a forced full-service pump.

The bill goes to Oregon Governor Tina Kotek to be signed into immediate effect.

Just what I always wanted to do....NOT!!! Stand out there in a howling wind and rain! And the giant pendulum called government swings once again. At least we will be able to go to an attendant operated pump and pay the same price per gallon as the self serve pump that is until some two bit bureaucrat decides to make points with his/her constituents and makes attendant operated pumps not required. :mad

Actually this is not yet true. The self serve bill is on the governor's desk and governor Kotek reportedly is undecided so there is still some hope.:clap. I and many others have called the governor's office and expressed our dissatisfaction so maybe just maybe?

I spent half of last week at a rally in rural Oregon, gassed up several times at different stations and never once had to interact with an attendant. Buying fuel was faster and easier than I’ve ever before experienced while traveling there, and it’s nice to see Oregon discontinuing their government interference into a business practice that’s the norm in 48 of the other 49 states.

Best,
DeVern

Well, not to belabor this off-topic, rabbit hole, but I lived in New Jersey for 40 years and had to deal with the no Self serve rule. I hated it as they never adequately filled your tank, they were never careful to not spill gas and lastly, it usually took longer because you had to wait for the attendant to deal with all of the pumps and payment options. And yes, we had cold-weather snow and wind during the winter, but I was very pleased moving to North Carolina and being able to pump my own gas.
