Arizona & Utah Trip Pro / Con of the 2023 RT

Motor32

Motor32
My trip in September 2023 on my 2023 BMW R1250RT to Sunset Crater Volcano, Wupatki, Vermilion Cliffs, North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Cedar Breaks, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capital Reef, Goblin Valley, Grand Staircase Escalante, Bears Ears, Natural Bridges, Valley of the Gods, Monument Valley. All of these are national monuments, national parks, or state parks in Arizona and Utah.

The Pros : Overall the bike runs great with plenty of power (except in E-Co, not good for passing).

I averaged around 50 MPG.

The handling was great, even with a heavy load. The suspension soaks up the bumps like a pro.

I'm using a Werks Quite-Ride windscreen, and liked being able to hear the bikes speakers at highway speeds, the stock screen had too much buffeting for me.

The lighting was great for seeing down the road, (the road lights didn't seem to make much of a difference in lighting up the road, but are good for people to see you).

The brakes always felt strong and powerful.

The Cons : The navigation is a bust, (I used a Garmin Zumo XT instead, ease of use, and it always works) when you scroll the RT's navigation to make it bigger, the roads get bigger, but not the print, (not helpful for my 58 year old eyes), it also looses the WiFi signal, and is just is too much trouble. This was something I was most excited for, but has turned into my biggest disappointment with the bike, sadly.

Not having stand alone gauges, (if you listen to the audio system, to change a station you have to be on that screen, and you lose the tachometer. I do miss the analog gauges of my old 2020 RT.

The Adaptive Cruise Control works fine, but at its farthest setting you're just too close (not bad at slow speeds, but a different story above 50 MPH, way too close for comfort). It also misses other riders if staggered in front of you. Another thing I noticed was, if it picks up a vehicle and slows you down, if it's very curvy it can lose the vehicle in front and accelerate back to speed, but the vehicle is still there, dangerous!!!

The Bluetooth that always steals the signal from my Cardo unit, (I listen to the bikes audio on the speakers, and my music on my phone to the Cardo, forcing me to play around with the phone to get it play on the Cardo, just ridiculous.

The quick shifter DOESN'T disengage the cruise control, (My 2020 RT did and you would start slowing down in the lower gear) not the case with the redesign.

Riding in the dark WITHOUT illuminated switches sucks, for the money you pay this bike it's unacceptable.

I forgot to add that the "original" XM antenna didn't work at all, then I posted some videos showing it dropping the signal, and sent them to BMW in Berlin. Amazingly the next day the dealer (who had my bike for three weeks) told me they would replace the stock one with a Sirrus branded one, it hasn't lost the signal since.

Here's a video of the trip.

I prefer my garmin nav5's, cardo for music on the 11RT. I don't use nor would use the WW, though it's there. Like you, I have the radio, but haven't turned it on for a few years now. The speakers just aren't up to the task at speed for me personally

It's a shame that BMW was in bed with Garmin for years with the NavV & VI, that worked all the time with GPS, then went with this "Hot Garbage" WiFi phone app that continually loses the connection, sad.

I have ridden in or driven a dozen or so cars with their "built-in" nav app and screen and still have not seen one that is even close in utility to my ten year old Zumo 660. The notion that BMW would on its first attempt come up with something good sounds like a joke to me. As frustrating as Basecamp is (I don't use it) and as finicky as some features can be I have yet to even glimse anything actually better for my use. I know others disagree but such is life.

Nice write up.

I have a trip coming in October that will encompass Albuquerque, Vegas, and Tucson on my 23 gsa and have a couple of questions.

How did you secure your bike overnight to prevent theft?

and did the handle bar vibrations bother you? I'm 55 and sometimes I do wind up with numb hands.

While I certainly have gripes about the BMW TFT system, last week I used one feature that is very useful - I got a reroute around traffic congestion caused by roadworks - saved me a lot of aggravation. You only get that kind of feature with realtime traffic updates. If they correct the small font issue (which I can imagine could be done in software), it will be a very nice system. I've mentioned before having the GPS builtin to the dashboard is a big usability win - far less distraction with a single point of focus/interaction.

Which GPS were you using? I don't think I have this option with the BMW Motorrad App running through my phone and connected to the dashboard cradle.

My bike (22 R1250RT) has the latest software and I'm running the latest version of the app. I believe real time traffic was enabled in the Connected app in early 2022.

Thanks...I guess it must pull the info from the phone connection.

I'll have to check out mine.

For security, I used an E-Z Touring half cover that packs up into a small bag that's included, and locked it to the bike with a pair of locks.

For the vibrations I made these grip covers, that work great and do the job. You can see them at 2:15 in this video I made.

Older GPS systems have this ability too. My Nav 5 supplies this information via its connection to the Garmin app on my phone.
