Rode from Southern Illinois through Kentucky, Southern Virginia, Kitty Hawk/Nags Head, Outerbanks to Ocracoke, ferried back to the mainland, through part of North Carolina, South Carolina on our way to meet our families in Gatlinburg. Yes we ran the Dragon!
I did not particularly like the congestion and commercialization of Nags Head and the northern end of the Outer Banks. Kitty Hawk is an interesting place to see where those bicycle makers flew the first airplane. Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke have good "charm" and the 2.25 hour long ferry ride back to the mainland was a nice relaxing change. Only made 170 miles that day.
Love the Kentucky parkways. Usually low volume of traffic, scenic and good roads that allow one to make good time at relatively high speeds. US 58 through Southern Virginia is an excellent road. Riding the Outer Banks at times required great concentration as the road was as wide as the island and we didn't want to fall in the ocean!
Went through the area of Lake Toxaway in North Carolina south of the Asheville area and near the South Carolina border. A nice place to get away from it all with some excellent riding.
Here's a few pic's from the ride.
