What are Airheads worth these days?

What were the conclusions if any regarding prices for airhead BMW motorcycles four years ago?

As I recall, the thinking was that the prices were getting higher and higher to unreasonable levels. That's when I offered to buy the OP's bike for the lo-ball figure. But, as I mentioned, I am not looking to buy another right now...

Yeah,

And how much did you pay for the cheap-o bikes? :dunno

I paid $1500 for the 77 R100RS. I think that I paid the same for the R60/6.

The last time that dealer had an airhead, I think that it went for $700 - it was a frankenbeemer mix of /5 and /6 parts. It did have a very nice smoke grey tank, seat cowl, and fairing (R90S style). Alas, I was 45 minutes too late in seeing the bike. Another feller that likes projects bought it.

I like to stop by that dealer a couple of times a week just to chat, take the occasional test ride, and - yeah - buy some nice bikes.

Well, this morning I checked out the results of the big Daytona bike auction and guess what I found?

Lot # 61A
1974 BMW R90/S

1974 BMW R90/S. Excellent condition. Just serviced!

This bike sold for $4500

Would you want this bike in your garage?

Absolutely, and that was a heck of a good price - but it was sold on March 7, 2009 - when the end of the world was near. There was all KINDS of stuff being unloaded at precisely the low point of the recession.

(I bought a new RV on a rainy, gloom day at the end of February, 2009 - for exactly 66% off list price - the dealer sold it well below what he paid for it. What a time to buy!)

I just love that Warren Buffet quote: "When it's raining gold, bring a bucket, not a thimble!"

It will be curious to see how the approximately 1/2 dozen or so do in this year's auction coming up on Saturday. http://www.batorauctions.com

Now we're getting somewhere. Prices seem to be on a downward trend. After Saturday's auction we'll have a better idea of just how soft the market is getting. It sure seems to be in favor of the buyer. I'm sure prices will rebound, but not before the economy in general rebounds. For those who can afford to buy, this seems like a great time too invest in a nice airhead.

I didn't know J Woods auction was now Bator auction.

If anyone is interested, have a look at the Lone Star BMW (Austin, TX) web site. There is an '88 R100RT listed for $7,500.

Also, the Plano dealer (BMW of North Dallas) now lists several airheads at some rather high prices.

... the ... dealer ... now lists several airheads at some rather high prices.

Well, askin' and gettin' ain't the same thing. It is much easier to start high and come down on price than realize that the price was set too low and try to raise it. :)

Very true. There may be a buyer who is willing to pay the asking price so why not set the price high and see what happens.

Nothing wrong with setting a high asking price but to answer the OP's question What are Airheads worth these days the selling price is more important.

I really like this. Mary says "but where do I sit?" She would love to have this for herself but at 4'11" she feels a bit more challenged. If we find the money I think that she would feel happy on a HD though. :bolt - Bob

Looky hyere people..... I'm gonna step in the poop and say this; the middle of the road baseline price of an airhead is $3000. Any given buyer might pay more for an exceptional example. I like to pay $500 or less for distressed bikes, up to $1000 depending on how complete and how whooped up it is, or isn't. It's pretty easy, really. For a beater/parts bike, you add up the value of the parts and start at half. For a runner, you have to factor in a great many more issues. Factors like originality, condition, desireability of any given model, and most importantly, the elusive X factor on the vibe you get from the seller.

Well...

Say what you please.

OTOH, reality and market records indicate that prices are all over the place, they have been for the last several years and a careful buyer with a good strategy in place, can buy similar bikes, at much lower prices with some consistency.

Heck, you could even make the same case for $4000 but the reality would be the same. IMO the market has been overheated by our mania for "collecting", with guys thinking that they're going to make a killing on old bikes. If you think about it, thats the same mania that fueled the housing boom. (People thinking they'd get rich by buying a place to live.)

Thats never been te case and it never will be.

Sat what you please.

C'mon man,...toss me a crumb here.

Everyone wants to dance around this topic, I offer real world price ranges from deals I have done in the last 12 months.

Here's another example. Two years ago, I hooked up a buyer with a seller where the seller wanted to move an R75/6. The seller had re-habbed the bike (which he bought for $800) but chose to fit a /5 drum front end for half the price of a new disc master cylinder. The bike ran well but was a little whooped up. The deal went down for $1900. Each party was happy with the outcome. Of course, I was the parts pirate on that bike, and I'm not done with it yet because the new owner wants to make it "original" by fitting a single disc front end. Guess who has the parts to make that happen? ha, ha,ha, ha,...all the way to the next deal.

Anyone can speak in generalities, I do it for real.
