Sena 10U Initial Impressions

I received the Sena 10U (Schuberth) as a Christmas present. While the weather and my time available has limited extensive evaluation, I can report the following:
1. Almost too easy to set up. I have the BMW Nav 5 on GSA and a Garmin 665 on K16. My android phone is paired to the GPS. Household Six has a Sena SMH10 on her helmet. Unlike the SRC collar, the Sena has universal intercom and will happily talk to My Nolan B4 units with no issues at all. I have not evaluated music sharing.

2. Sound quality is excellent as the 10U has the same speakers as the Sena 20S. Speaker placement is key due to the interior padding of the Schuberth.

3. Installation took less than 10 mins. While there is a YouTube video on the installation, I found I didn't need it. I didn't look at instructions either. It's fairly straightforward. But that resource is available. I love the fact that there is nothing hanging off the side of the helmet.

4. Control can be somewhat daunting as there are ALOT of controls to commit to memory. Especially when adding the remote in the mix. With limited riding from now until the weather breaks, I won't have the sequences committed to memory until I get some more saddle time. What I did do is make a laminated cheat sheet for my tank bag.
I make the print rather large so I don't have to squint to see it.

5. The remote control is something I will have to get used to as well. In the end, I'll probably get and use the wrist remote instead. The buttons on the remote are very small and difficult to use with heavy gloves. But on my short test rides, I was able to do what I wanted wearing the BMW 2in1 gloves. The power on the remote according to Sena will last several months so depending on how much you ride, the remote should only have to be charged a couple of times during the riding season. The spring is fairly robust and I feel confident it will stay there during off road conditions. There was no interference with the clutch at all (on either bike)

6. Charging. The Sena cannot be used while charging. The supplied USB cable can be a pain to connect to the battery in the neck roll because at connects at a 90 degree angle. I used a spare phone cable that connected straight on and found that to be much easier. The battery is rated for about 10 hours. I have not evaluated that yet.

7. I have a 2XL helmet and experience no interference with the battery pack which sits in the neck roll. Some people have though. I think that might depend on your neck size. Some people have also stated that the battery placement inhibits the exhausts flow of air. I have not evaluated that either. The day I rode was 36 degrees.

8. Some have claimed that streaming mp3's from the Nav unit was coming through in mono. I have not found that to be valid in my case. I paid the Sena with both a Garmin 665 and the BMW Nav V, both stream in stereo and resume in stereo when the connection is restarted.

9. I did NOT do a firmware update. I did not even check. I wanted to see how it worked out of the box. It works so I see no reason at this point to do one even if one is available.

10. Household Six got great pricing on the unit (somewhere south of 230.00). I have found them avail for 260.00 at some sites.

11. I also suspect that the 10U will fit in the new Schuberth E1 Adventure as it is based on the C3 Pro.

Compared to the Sena 20S:

-you loose the ambient noise speaker
-distance between riders is reduced
-the number of riders that can join your commo network is also reduced
