RR stuck in neutral

Guys, I'm a returnee to the oilhead ranks after a few year of absence. I bought an '02 RR recently , 16k miles and apparently in very good shape. I've put less than a thousand miles on it and found last night that the transmission was stuck. I'm not certain if it was in first or neutral, but the green light says neutral. It's just plain stuck, frozen. It also makes an uneven rattling noise with the engine running and the clutch out. The rattle goes away with the clutch engaged. Is this stuck business familiar to anyone?

It may be something broken inside the transmission. But there is a chance the shifter lever is all cruddy and not moving. Disconnect the linkage between the lever and the transmission ( find the little metal clip around and sticking into one ball joint and swivel it away and then pull out) and then remove, clean, and grease the pedal pivot if it seems at all sticky.
 
Thanks, Paul, I'll give that a try. The linkage all looks very good but no point in tearing it down without checking the linkage. I figured to pull that clip and turn the splined link downward so I could get ahold of it and see if anything moves with that more direct approach.

Disconnecting the linkage will tell you whether the problem is inside or outside the transmission. Leave the lever arm on the transmission shaft and just disconnect at a ball joint (heim joint).
 
Paul, you may visualize this as well as anyone: I had replaced the shocks with Wilbers and on the rear, of course, undone the stock preload adjuster. Rather than leave the threaded hole bare I had screwed the big allen screw all the way down tightly. It is (those orderly Germans) right above the foot control part of the linkage and immobilized it. The bike is fine! Thanks for the prompt that got me looking at the linkage.
