I need to replace the beat up D&D muffler on my 95 R1100R. I'm starting to look around at options now. Anyone gone through this before or have any recommendations?

Thanks!

least expensive and many thing the best way is to buy stock muffler from MOA flea market, they come up often, RS and RT use same muffler. they can be had pretty cheap because they last a long time.

If you want more sound, then you can drill 3 holes in end cap about 3/8 dia, if that is not loud enough go to 1/2 inch.

On a boxer, aftermarket exhaust gain mostly sound, very little if any horsepower some actually run worse.

Cheap way out.

and it will never sound like a Harley.

I have seen them for free on the IBMWR site...

I would like to hear the resulting sound from drilling holes in the end cap??? I've never heard that one...

When you drill the end cap of the stock canister, it in essence creates a large body straight through muffler. The insides of the muffler uses the canister as a sound cancelling chamber. The exhaust is first routed into the main chamber through the diffuser section, then the exhaust goes back into the large elbow just ahead of the canister body, makes a 180 degree turn in the elbow section, before it goes out the final long bent tube and out the exhaust. Some exhaust in the chamber section acts with the diffuser section to add a bit more sound character.

When you drill the end cap, you bypass all that and the exhaust simply exits the main canister with little baffling. It also slightly leans out the fuel mix. But more so, that large canister is the first stage to dampen the "popping" common to Oilheads with very lean "closed throttle decel" fuel/air mix. By drilling the end cap you will get a lot more popping noise on decel. The only way to cure that is to richen the fuel mix with a Techlusion or similar device.

I know all this because I cut my failed muffler canister off (they crack at the outlet tube) and built my own design for a more free-flow exhaust. I got a bit more sound, and a lot more popping, until I installed a Techlusion.

I have a stock exhaust I removed from my 95 R1100R at about 40,000 miles. You can have it for the cost of shipping. PM me if you are interested.
