I love mine because I have short legs, but I never go in the dirt. I like the range and comfort for traveling and I avoid freeways like the plague. Depending on your definition of "dirt" maybe it'll be fine, maybe the reduced ground clearance will limit your enjoyment. Mine worked fine for the Dalton and Top of the World highways.
IMO taking a 600 lb bike offroad is less than ideal. Just because something CAN be done doesn't mean it SHOULD be done. Sure, "Long Way Around" is inspiring but they had a whole support system that traveled with them.
