R1150RT system case broken tang

2002 R1150RT. Heavy rain finally got to me. My gravel driveway softened up and bike fell over on left side. Not sure exactly how, but it did. The metal tang that is the locking mechanism to attach system bag to bike broke off. The whole assembly is pop riveted so would be hard to take apart to get a weld done on the piece - maybe not impossible but difficult to get it done today.

Right now I'm looking at a secure way to attach the bag to the bike that's a step up from cargo net.

Any ideas? I'm starting to look for replacement bag as well but leave for Toronto and Duluth tomorrow!! (Have to get touchy feely experience at Aerostich. Mail order just doesn't do it.)

If there is a travel store nearby get one of those wide suitcase straps, or two. One around the bag vertically and maybe one horizontally ought to do the trick. Otherwise, try regular 1" wide lashing straps from a big box or auto parts store. 6 foot straps should work.

The case will lock closed but not lock to the bike. I need a way to secure it to the mounts but there's not any obvious place for zip ties or bungees.

I don't have anyone nearby with RT and dealer (not nearby) was not much help. He would of course sell me new repair kit or new bag.

If I understand you correctly, the metal latch which is between the two top tabs is gone. If this is the case, perhaps cutting a plastic or wooden shim to slip in it's place would do the trick. Polypropelene is easy to cut and it could then be held with a couple of screws. Between that and Paul's suggestion you should be pretty secure. Believe me when I say that having the bag come off at 75 mph is a very bad thing as I recently found out the hard way.

I drilled through both of the mounting hooks on the bag and the centering bracket as well and then zip tied in place with 5 heavy zip ties. Barely noticeable, firmly in place, will carry more zip ties and check for wear. Might put the shim in also to hold the whole thing tight.

Thanks for suggestions. I'll probably get the kit from dealer and fix it right when back from this trip.

Zip tied hook on case to mounting bracket on bike like this on 3 spots. Real fun to do this in the rain.

I have the same problem with my R1150R. Case clamp was broken when I bought the bike, and have unrivited it, but not an easy way to fix.
I did see a 2nd hand clamp/catch assembly at Beemerboneyard web site once, but went fairly quick. I think $95 USD.

I believe both side catch assembleis are the same, only the case itself that is different.

I/you just need a busted case:D
