R1150RS Top case selection

Greetings,
I finally own my first BMW. After the trials and tribulations of an internet purchase and shipping anxieties, we took our 2002 Pacific Blue R1150RS out for its Florida christining ride in the worst of lovebug season. The bike has the side cases but as we plan more touring, the need for a top case becomes evident, not only for additional storage but to also provide a passenger backrest. My first inclination is to order the BMW case since I assume the quality would match the rest of the machine. As I understand, I would need to purchase a mounting bracket and the backrest in addition to the case. I would appreciate any input as to my selecton of the BMW or possibly a GIVI case.

Stick with the systems case

I have an '02 R1150GS with the system cases and travel truck. I got the trunk lined and it is very handy. It matches well, easy access, easy detachment and very durable. I put bungee buddies on top and can hook up almost anything to it. After 5 plus years and 75,000 miles it works well and carries stickers, what more could you want?:clap

Midnight bugs taste just as bad as Noon time bugs.

I have a Givi topcase on my R1100RS, and I've been happy with it. Givi quality is on par with everything else on the bike. For any topcase, you'll have to add mounting brackets. Mine were installed by a previous owner, and he did a lousy job of cutting the rear cowling where the additional struts had to poke thru. So if you install it yourself, be very careful.

Givi has a large selection of sizes, so you can get it as big as you need. Mine is the 52L Maxia, and it's too large, IMHO. While very useful, it lets me overload the case. I've had both struts welded back together, and now I try to be careful about too much weight.

I have System Cases (33L Top Box) on my 02RT and a Givi Monokey System on my VFR. I am saving pennies to put the Givi Top box on the RT. I find it has more space and better shape.
