R1150R has no power to injectors

2002 R1150R - Worked as a moto at a bike race in the rain a couple of weeks ago. Had about 100 miles at slow speed in rain working race, then started home. Bike quit 10 miles down the road. I think I have narrowed it to an electrical issue, probably from the rain as it was very heavy at times. I need some advice on how to check the electrical for the power loss to the injectors. I have emptied the tank and cleaned it out. I was going to test the spray pattern on the injectors, but there was no spray, so I removed and cleaned the injectors. The fuel pump primes when the ignition is on and pumps fuel through the lines with the injectors off when I turned it over. The injectors open when attached to a 9v battery for cleaning, but not on the bike. Ideas of where to check the electrical to the injectors? Thanks

Do you have spark? If both squirt and spark are missing it points to either the HES or the Motronic. If just squirt is lost and you do have spark then I would be more suspicious of the Motronic but the failure of one Hall sensor is possible.

I would disconnect and make sure the big plug at the Motronic is clean and dry. I would also disconnect and make sure the connection to the harness from the HES is clean and dry.

Thanks Paul. The connection from the HES under the tank looked good. Since it would not hit when I sprayed starter fluid in the throttle body, am pretty sure it has no spark either. Tonight I will pull the large connection from the motronics before diving into the HES. I may put the motronics in a bag of rice for a day or so to try and pull any moisture from it if there is any. It worked on my cell phone that also died that Sunday. I found an article about testing the HES to work from, which I wish I had found before putting the front cover back on. Have enjoyed your Benchwrenching articles over the years.

This may or may not be related, but for the past couple of years the bike will shut off when hot, usually in the first 30 miles. It fires right back by twisting the throttle if moving, or just restarting if at a stop. Typically only happens once during a ride.

Thanks Omega. Good info. Removed HES and 3 wires at the harness had no insulation, just bare wire. Will have rebuilt and see if the problems are fixed. Bike has 56k miles and the HES has the shiny wire covering, so appears to be the early style. Thanks for all the input so far.

I’m pretty sure it’s a sooner or later with a bike of that vintage. If you like the bike, that HES refreshed should be a good load off your mind.
Let us know how you make out.

You know GSAddict in this forum is Da Man for HES rewiring, right?

GSaddict IS the man. I just had him rewire my HES and he did an excellent job at a great price with a quick turnaround.

HES came back from rewiring on Thu. Reinstalled, put tank on and started bike. I have a few things to do yet before getting on the road, air filter, plugs, etc, but it fired right up. Thanks all for your advice and comments. For those with a pre-2004 “R”, if you have not had the HES re-wired and make it through summer, it may be a good investment to have it done in the off- season. Much better option than breaking down in a pouring rain and calling your spouse to come get you. Ughhh.
