R1100R rear shock preload adjust

How do you adjust the preload? I have the spanner, but when I apply some pressure to turn the adjuster, there seems to be some resistance. I do not see any sort of locking tang or nut that would prevent it from turning. What am I missing? Note, I have not lifted the rear wheel off of the ground, if that makes any difference.

You are going to feel resistance for sure because you are turning the preload adjuster against the spring load. It might be a bit easier with the bike on the centerstand. Also may want to spray some lube, WD40 or similar, around the preload adjuster area, that help to make it turn easier.

Also, in the tool kit is an extension tube that fits on the end of the spanner. Try that for more leverage.

rear shock preload

Is the preload the Large knob? What is the small screw at the bottom of the strut?( The screw that on my 1100RT can not be adjusted because the swing arm is too close to it and a screw driver can't get to it)

large knob is preload adjust. that is increased (turned in) to compesate for heavier loads. can be used to adjust sag settings as well.
small screw at bottom is for rebound damping. that is increased (turned cw) to slow the shock's motion related to extenson.
compression damping would slow how quickly shock compresses. BMW typically does not include compression damping adjustments on the shocks they use.

Thank you, Bikerfish. I'm going to adjust this on my RT as soon as it comes home from the Dr... I backed off the preload, but the bike is a little quick to return to extension. It pushes me off the seat a bit.....
