That output shaft is on with a lot of torque...it will make a loud pop when it lets loose. Having the right tool is very important. Matt Parkhouse has a good discussion of the removal of the output flange in the November 2014 Owners News. It's available on the main website in the archives for the ON. I still have not gotten to removal of input shaft and inspection of transmission. I did replace the transmission with intent of fixing the one in question.

I will crack the problem case and report back. I apologize for not confirming any theories at this time. One thing is for sure the issue was indeed transmission related, not clutch or rear drive.
