Powerlet Dual USB Adapter issue

I searched and searched and could not find this precise answers, so here goes:

I just got a 2017 F700GS. Having had an older GS with a Powerlet outlet on the side, to connect my iPhone to the bike, I used a cable with the Powerlet plug on one end and the female usb on the other. It worked fine. The same cord/adapter does not seem to work on the new bike where the (outlet is on top). Any idea why that might be? Is there something you have to turn on for the outlet to work?

And, for the trickle charge, just rig up a cord and use the Powerlet outlet? The Rider's Handbook only says the dealer can sell you a charger/tender, and the Motorrad website is useless.

Thanks,
Robert

On the newer bikes with Canbus the outlet is not live when the bike is off.
Have you tried it when the bike is running?

Yes. I ran it all day and the iPhone died. Now, I just went out to garage to try it again--as soon as I turned on the ignition, the phone started charging. I had checked all of the connections to make sure, but now I'm thinking that since I was riding all day in the rain, maybe some water got into the outlet and the Canbus turned it off. Very odd. Thanks for the reply.

It's also possible the plug wiggled loose while riding. I've had that happen with my heated jacket liner plugged into the BMW outlet.

The Optimate-4 smart charger is available in a version which charges the bike through a CanBUS socket. Here's the URL for the piece: http://tecmate.com/products/optimate4cb/

Many people just put an SAE pigtail on the battery and use whatever charger/maintainer they like.

Welcome to the Forums, BTW!

Check your charging cord. I have a 700 also, and thought it was the outlet when in fact, I had a faulty cord from my iphone. It happens more than you would think.

Thank you. Turns out it was the Powerlet plug. The contacts on the side were not making contact, so I pried them out a bit and now it works fine. I appreciate the idea.
