This is indeed a great mystery, sounds like there are many different explanations, some can be eliminated again as this is not happening on other bikes. Good points are brought up with the weight distribution on the left and right sides. The drive shaft and final drive both being on the right side you'd think the wear would be more on the right instead of the left and would also happen on the rear tire. This is a great mystery for me too, I rode plenty of years on other bikes (not BMWs) and this never occurred on any other bikes so it's definitely not driving habits or road conditions, especially because I live at the same place for over 23 years and rode bikes the same exact places and routes.

Not with a laser, but with strings or a long straightedge, and yes, there was an offset. And don’t ask which way, because A) it was back in the 80s and I can’t remember and B) it wouldn’t be the same for all Beemers—they don’t all mount the shaft on the same side of the bike. Easy to see for yourself, tho, with a spool of string and a pair of 4x8x16 concrete blocks and some tape.

Selfishly I'd love to hear an oral history of the r1100s and r1200s bikes as I own one and find them fascinating from a design standpoint, and they of course marked the beginning of the "sportbike" effort at BMW which has now evolved into the current range of insane boffo S bikes (that appear to be working out really well for the brand). Boxer Cup chapter seems rife with interesting history as well [I recently rewatched "Long Way Round" and was thrilled to see a BCR pop up under one of the producers in the finale].

Please let us all know as soon as this podcast launches. I've been consuming "200 Miles" and "Ride Inside" for years but hunger for new content! [after all, the house ain't gonna clean itself ].
