Need Advice on R1200RT

Down at the MOA Rally , I test rode a new, 1600 mile R1200RT, with my wife as passenger, It performed great, had decent , quiet , smooth power from stopped -on up. Why Doesn't Mine , which only had 1400 miles at the time down there ??
My '08 rattles and knocks at, from stopped, on up, Vibrates more and gets 32mpg
when everybody else at the rally and motels that had the same engine were getting about 50, 2 up, and their bike didn't rattle and knock .
I bought it new, had the 600 mile check done by the dealer, when I complained about the sound then, as you could hear it at just idle.
I got it back, mechanic says"they all are that way, it just needs to break in"
Taking his "expert advice", I have rode it the way I got it back from 600 mile service and it sounds worse than ever , with more breakin miles, a little less than 3K , getting back from the rally. At the rally , going up and down the hills in the rally site, people would turn around and look "concerned" when they heard the knocking, while other R1200RTs were quietly putt-ing through the crowd.
Did I get sold a bad one, Do I cut my losses , about $20,000 , and sell it, lose about $5K or what?
Will BMW do right by me , somehow, or am I screwed $20.K with a ruined bike that the local dealer's mechanic can't make it run like a good one, twice ?
I still have a 28 year old SilverWing that runs better than this, should I write off having a BMW and go back to it ? What causes knocking that hopefully can be tuned out ? As sophisticated as this model is supposed to be , mechanically and computer controlled , how can it run so bad without the display not indicating a problem? I am sick and feel screwed about all this ! The next closest dealer is 3 hours away. Oh yeah , getting the bike back after the 600 mile check, 2 of my plastic body panels on the left side were scraped up, costing me $165. to paint-match and repaint! Out of my pocket, since at that point when I found it after getting home, it would just be my word against their's , so I ate that.

I'd say it's time to ride 6 hours for a second opinion. Inconvenient, but sounds like your current dealer may be the problem. 32 mpg ain't right, unless you are doing some very extreme riding. I hope it is at least a nice ride to and fro.

As for the scratched paint, you can't really expect the dealer to make it right if you don't even mention it to them.

Seems way premature to give up on your RT.

Go for the second opinion. No way I would take a loss, or "eat" anything without digging in a bit deeper.

Too bad about the paint issue too...sounds like a real azzhat dealer to me.

If the dealer you went to is close by you could go talk with the manager and get his take, either way it is under warranty so it should not cost you a dime to get it taken care of. I would be very forward on your expectations with the manager as well. He may not even know you ever had this problem. If you are not satisfied with his approach to your problem then go to a different dealership.
South Sound BMW here in Fife, WA always gives me a loaner bike to ride free of cost which is fun because one gets to go test ride some different models.

Good Luck,

Sorry to hear of your bike problems. I also have an 08 R1200RT and it runs great and I get about 54 MPG with just me on it. Don't get rid of the bike but take it back to your dealer and have them find the problem because it definately sounds like it has one.
When I purchased mine I had the large top case put on but have since taken it off and stored it. The difference in handling is amazing to me and especially at parking lot speed but you can feel the difference in tight corners also. I'm going to try the corners without the side cases one of these days.

My experience indicates there must be a mandatory statement by all dealers regarding "they all do that" prior to fixing the darn thing. Well, to be fair, that's not really true...but it seems that way.

Did they take your bike for a test ride? Maybe suggest a side-by-side comparison with another RT with similar mileage? Good luck.

Major tune issues, Knock?? check and make sure the throttle body cables are seated in the ferrules.

I get 40 mph at the race track with my boxer, and you can't run it harder on the street than that, someone is missing something simple.

Sounds like a dealer, not a BMW issue, but you never know.

My '06RT has averaged 50 mpg for 24,000 miles and has never knocked, even when I was forced to run a couple of tanks of 87 octane gas. IIRC, there was a software upgrade for the '08 models which addressed the knocking problem, so your dealer really needs to sort it out.
Hope it works out for you without too much additional hassle.
Tom
