Need 2 lane advice from Northampton, Pa west to Midland, Pa/Chester, OH

What are some good roads between Northampton PA and Midland PA? I will be dropping into PA from points NE in July, stopping to see a buddy in Northampton. What are your suggestions for heading pretty much due west, leaving PA through Midland? Don't mind short stretches of slab to get around metro areas, otherwise prefer 2 lane roads.

I enjoyed looking around the Regional Northeast forum before posting.

Thanks in advance.

From Northampton, PA

1) PA248-W to Palmerton, PA

2) PA895-W to PA443-W to PA61-N to Pottsville, PA

3) Follow PA61-N to Sunbury (Don't miss Centralia, PA the shining star of many ON articles)

4) PA147-N to PA45W to Lewisburg, PA

5) At Lewisburg, take PA192-W to Boalsburg, PA

6) PA45-W to US22-W at Holidaysburg, PA

7) Follow PA56W -US422W to Indiana, PA

8) US422W to Butler, PA

9) PA68-W should take you into Midland, PA.

It's a long ride with lots of congestion at both ends. In the middle is rolling hills, small towns, farms and numerous Amish buggies between Lewisburg and Boalsburg.

Have fun.

Thanks for the route, especially the 3 digit roads. I need to see Centralia even if I end up going around the south side of Pittsburgh, leaving PA through Washington.

Appreciate it!

US30, the Lincoln Hwy, is a fairly direct route along the southern border of PA, which the PA Turnpike follows, but it is blessed with an abundance of traffic signals and stop signs.

So far I'm liking your northern route!

From ! above stay on 248 W to 209 S ,follow to Nesquehoning, picking up route 54 to Ashland then 42 to Centralia.

return to Ashland an back on 54 follow to 901 to 61 at Kulpmont picking up 125 going to Hegins, picking up 25 west.

Follow 25 west to Millersburg on the Suseguehanna river. If the river level is high enough the paddle wheel ferry should be running. then follow Rt 34 to the intersect with US 22/322 west then follow to the Ohio . RIDE SAFE

The old estates on the shore of Lake Erie near Ashtabula, OH are a sight to see. If you're going that way.....which is quite nice.

Let me amplify that a bit. 30 from Latrobe to Breezewood is good. 30 from Breezewood to Fort Loudon is stunningly good. 30 from Fort Loudon to Gettysburg is good other than having to go through Chambersburg. 30 from Gettysburg to Lancaster is bad. 30 from Lancaster into the Philly area is horrible.

How many stop lights are on the US30 "Bypass" around York:)

I'm a "glass half full" guy so I need to point out that there is a Five Guys Burger as well. But, yeah, getting through York is even nastier than getting through Chambersburg.

I'm still trying to recall if I've ever needed to be in Chambersburg? There's an I-81 exit there, correct?

In 1981 I did a weak attempt at a 2-lane weekend trip. Leaving York, that black hole of my early working career, I took US30 west to US219N. Camped at a state park near Kane, PA and headed east on US 6 to US15 south and returned the white rose city. So, I must have been to Chambersburg.

Yeah, you would have gone through. It's not as bad and getting through York, but is about two miles of congestion. And yes, there's an 81 exit, plus 30 and 11 intersect there.

It was the town that was raided by Confederate cavalry and burned when it refused to pay a ransom. Lee, Longstreet, and Hill were in the vicinity of Chambersburg before they moved toward Gettysburg.

Hello, when are you going to be in Northampton, PA. I live just North of Northampton in a small town of Danielsville.

Aiming for the night of 17 Jul, but it depends on when my Northampton buddy is available. He has an ungodly work schedule. That would be on the way from Acadia NP back to IA. Another option would be 9 or 10 July when I am headed toward Acadia.

Normally I ride across northern PA when headed to the east coast, but I might have to drop down and try some of the roads being discussed in previous posts.

Take US322 from the OH border to I99/I80 at State College. Follow I-80 to PA880N at Carroll.PA. Follow PA880N to PA44N until US220E. Take US15N at Williamsport,PA to Corning, NY. At that point, you either go north along the east shore of Lake Seneca (NY414, I think) to I-90E at Seneca Falls or you head east to Binghamton, NY then I-88N, which takes you near Cooperstown, NY and the north-side of the Catskills.

Thanks - I'll take a look at that. Not too far from Wellsboro, which would be nice to re-visit. I liked the Shewood Motel and it's within walking distance of the Wellsboro House Restaurant and Brewery. The Grand Canyon was shrouded in fog the last time through so I'd like to visit it again.

"Normally" I cross OH on US224 or US30. When headed east, I bite the bullet and use I-71/I-76/I-80 to Wesley or Clarion. Then I'm good to go on US62 or US66. Rode PA666 one time on the way home. Stopped for gas. A guy saw my IA license plate and told me I wasn't on the fastest way home.

I've never made it across PA without rain and/or fog so I probably should post a warning on this forum when I know my schedule.

I have a supernatural ability to cause rain by planning a ride. Canceled a Virginia/West Virginia one week before last after moving it twice and then causing rain on the new dates. The people of California should pay me to come out and ride up and down the state for a few days.

It usually rains every 2 or 3-days.

Relative to seeing Wellsboro, take PA287 North after rejoining US220N at Jersey Shore. That will take you directly to Wellsboro. North of Wellsboro, PA287N terminates at US15N.
