Moving Nav V between bikes

I am thinking about renting a bike for a few days while traveling next summer, and I would like to use my own Nav V. So I am trying to understand the Navigation System > Security settings description in the bike's owner's manual. (Text is copied below. The NAV V manual I have has even less information.)

Currently Lock Device is not turned on on my Nav V and as far as I recall, I have never entered a PIN. As long as I leave Lock Device off, I can use it on any bike I want, right?

The owner's manual text is pretty confusing, at least to me. :scratch I think it says that if I turn on Lock Device and install the GPS in the bike, I have the option of adding the bike's VIN to the GPS so that I don't have to enter the PIN every time I start the bike. Or presumably, I could not add the bike's VIN to the GPS and enter my PIN every time.

If I put the GPS in a different bike, I can do the same, either add the VIN or not. If I don't, I will need to enter a PIN to use it, right?

What happens if I turn Lock Device off? Can I then use it on any bike without a PIN? Does it erase the VINs, or is it write-only so that you can only key it to five different bikes over its lifetime?

The Garmin Lock help page is not really any more helpful.

Cheers, Ken

Security settings

The BMW Motorrad Navigator V can be secured against unauthorized use with a four-digit PIN (Garmin Lock). When this function is activated, once the Navigator GPS receiver is cradled on the motorcycle and the ignition is switched on you will receive a prompt asking whether the motorcycle should be added to the list of secure vehicles. If you answer "Yes" to this question, the Navigator saves the vehicle identification number (VIN) of this motorcycle in its internal memory. A maximum of five VINs can be saved in this way. When the Navigator is subsequently switched on by switching on the ignition on one of those motorcycles, entry of the PIN is no longer necessary. If the Navigator is removed from the motorcycle while switched on, a security prompt asking for the PIN to be entered is issued.

Not sure about of the lock option is set, but my Nav V doesn't have lock on and I've moved it across a few bikes with zero issue.

I'd assume if you turn the lock off you'd have not problem.

The Garmin software lock for the Nav-V, as I understand it, can either be left deactivated, or activated.

If you do not activate it, than there is not issue with using it any where on any bike.

However, if you do activate than you set a PIN and if you turn on the Nav-V when it is not attached to the bike with the VIN you have entered previously, or somewhere other than the loaction you entered when setting up the "software lock", than the Garmin secuirty requirement is that you enter your PIN. So, if you have the security enabled and turn the unit on while it is mounted on the bike who's VIN is stored or while you are at the loaction that is stored there is nothing left to do. Anything outside that and you need to enter the PIN.

It's a security feature but it doesn't keep the unit from being stolen (most units likely don't have it activated and most thieves likely don't know about it). All it does is, if activated, a thief won't be able to benefit from their actions. You'll still be out a GPS.

I never activated mine and it moves between my GTL, my 4button mount on the 9T and a regular mount on my Springfield, no issues.
