German Cross Country Championship 2009, Rd. 1, Tollwitz

Kirssi keeps BMW in the winner's circle

The 2009 season started with a familiar name on top. Simo Kirssi is Mr. Cross Country, and it showed again during the first round of the German Cross Country Championship (GCC). The reigning German and European champion simply dominated the competition at the "Tollwitzer Sandkessel", as 3,000 spectators witnessed a successful opener to the continent's biggest off road series.

Weather conditions were almost perfect - 17?? C and slightly overcast - when the gate dropped for the gruelling two-hour moto of the XCPro class. The Finn was blocked by another rider a little at the start, but soon found his way from tenth to fifth. He then watched his rivals a bit before getting on the gas around the 40-minute mark. The track by then had taken its toll from a full weekend's race activities and was filled all over with whoops.

As the race went on, Kirssi left Motocross fixtures Kornel Nemeth - a regular top three finisher in the German Motocross Masters - and sand specialist Dennis Schr?Âter behind. Also, none of the quartet of French riders, or the ultra-quick Polish pair of Taddy Blazusiak and Bartosz Oblucki, stood a chance. Same for Germany's very own cross country man Bert Meyer.

When the chequered flag came out after 2:05:54 hrs, Kirssi had stolen over one minute from his fiercest competitors. And he didn't even use special cross country settings, he instead used the very bike that recently carried him to top ten finishes in the World Enduro Championship.

Simo Kirssi: "The start wasn't that good. I wasn't quite on top of it and found myself a little blocked to the right. So I had some extra work cut out for me. I then studied the track before I went for it around a third into the race. I don't mind the sand and the whoops. Yes, it is energy-sapping indeed, but I had a lot of fun. My 450 worked perfectly. There's not a single blister on my hands."

OBLUCKI FOURTH AT GERMAN CROSS COUNTRY FIRST RACE
06-04-2009
The first German Cross Country race took place last week end in Tollwitz. Factory rider Bartosz Oblucki entered the competition for the first time however some minor technical problems prevented Bartosz from taking a place on the podium.

After a slow start , Bartek immediately began working his way through the field on his WR250 and was able to pass fellow countryman Tadeusz Blazusiak and BMW rider Kirssi. Unfortunately a clutch problem late in the day caused him to lose a little time resulting in him finishing in 4th place overall. “I’m happy with this result” Oblucki said after the race “this is my first time in the German Championship and frankly I had no idea what to expect. Now, I understand the “game rules” and I’m sure next time I’ll be able to finish on the podium”. Bartek is now back to Poland to relax a little – the rider went through 3 races in a row! – but soon he will be back on the World Enduro Championship scene for the third round on April 18-19 in Sardinia.
Two wins and a podium for Lettenbichler, Goblet and Salminen

07 April 2009 15:14
Andi Lettenbichler, Juha Salminen and Jeff Goblet, all three riding for BMW Motorrad Motorsport, stormed to two victories and a podium finish past weekend at the Spanish, Belgian Enduro championships and the Telfer In(n)duro in Austria.

Spanish Enduro Championship: Juha Salminen used the race at Requena near Valencia - the second round of the series - as practice for the upcoming WEC event on the Island of Sardinia. The Spanish campaign is probably the toughest domestic in the world, and Salminen used the super-competitive meeting to work on the setup of his BMW G 450 X. He ended taking third in the E2 class and fourth in the Overall result, now lying third in the points.

2. Oriol Mena, Husaberg
3. Juha Salminen, BMW Motorrad Motorsport
4. Joan Barrada, Suzuki
5. Xavier Puidgemont, Husqvarna

Belgian Enduro Championship: Jeff Goblet, who currently sits in second place in the E2 class, gained valuable ground at the event in Bilstain held past Sunday. Goblet now trails series leader Thierry Klutz by one point. The BMW rider wrestled down his opponent in a tight battle that left the two separated by only three seconds after 15 special stages.

Jeff Goblet: My bike worked perfectly. It was a pretty tough fight, there were some really fast guys in the race. Luckily for me, I didn??t make any mistakes and came home first ahead of Thierry."

Telfer In(n)duro: In Austria, Extreme Enduro rider Andi Lettenbichler rode to victory at the second edition of the Telfer In(n)duro. The challenging track inside Telf??s skating hall asked for a mixture of speed and finesse. Lettenbichler, who pit pundits regularly mentioned as their race favourite, showed his skills in every moto along the way. He then used his proven trial capacity at the first obstacle of the main event (giant tractor tyres) to take immediate command - and never looked back.

Gorgeous Bike Candy... Mass centralization nearly half a century before it became a sportbike catchphrase.

Do I want to see a Norton rotary at the Isle of Man? Absolutely. I was stationed in the UK when it was in it's original "glory days". I'm no fan of old marques getting "resurrected" by financial speculators, but if we're talking about many of the key original staff and employees behind the original 588 rotary, that's a lot different than yet another group of investors slapping an old logo on a bike someone else developed and trying to sell it as "authentic".

I like Bench Racing, Mika; so however you have to present it, as long as you can keep it going, I'll read it.
