MOTORREADs : 18 December 2008

Still Wondering
Welcome to the first post of MOTORREADs. It will be a recurring thread covering things that catch my eye as I ‘purposely wonder’ about the internet. I had planed to hold off until after the New Year to introduce this thread. I missed doing and as a result found myself a bit cranky.

If you have followed the Morning Reads in the past MOTOREADs will feel familiar to you. The motorcycle world will be the lead as always. Cage things will appear but with a bit tighter focus than in the past. Racing in most cases will move out to the Bench Racing threads when that project gets fully rolling. I will continue to cruise the BMW PressClubs and bring what I pick up there back to you. Then there will be the crazy fun stuff I find along the way. After all that work there will be Bike Candy as a reward.

After your Bike Candy it is your turn to do some work with comments. I really like the comments you make, the information you bring and your views.

The layout is similar and you will find some of the old things you said you enjoyed. I have streamlined a few things to make it simpler for me and I hope cleaner for you to read. It is still a work in progress.

The name has changed to eliminate the morning deadline. If you ever start a blog or publish a recurring thread do not time bound yourself with a title like Morning Reads. My hope is to be published most weekdays and take weekends off until racing season begins.

Long time browser or new reader, I hope you enjoy MOTORREADs.

BMW will see it as a threat to the market share in a key segment while GS owners may be smug that the Italian marquee is trying to be like them.

The big thumper appears to be learning a lesson in economics from its 450 sibling. The engine is now being produced in China and shipped back to Germany for assembly. This is keeping the price down and making the bike more competitive in the market place. To date the quality reports on the 450 have been good.

Glad you like it Paul.

Hey when you are done with your snow blower, put a flame thrower attachment on and send it out here. We are having a good old prairrie snain/ice storm here. While the power is on I am watching Steve McQueen in Le Mans on TCM. He just cracked up his car. Driver safety has come a long way.

Glad you're back at it Mika!

Good stuff, too. I'll be looking forward to seeing a Ducati Multistrada/adventure bike, it sounds similar to Suzuki's VStrom as described.

On a somewhat related note, Cycle World reported that BMWs other Italian adventure tour competitor, Moto Guzzi, scored a minor coup by winning a contract to supply bikes to the Berlin Polizei.

I always enjoyed LeMans, both the real thing and Steve McQueen's "labor of love". Those Gulf Porsches covered with dead bugs and burnt rubber epitomize endurance racing for me. I hope to see yellow Corvettes continue to race there, thundering around in the dark with lights blazing, sounding great and making America proud... Victory for the (reasonably) affordable supercar!
