Kbike Coolants?

I need to change my K1200LT coolant can I use Prestone? The only requirement that I find in my service manual is that the coolant is nitrate free.

I usually use Peak or Zerex. Peak has some pre-blended 50-50 stuff out that makes the job easier.

I use Prestone extended life. Nitrate and silica free and safe for aluminum is what youÔÇÖre looking for.

K1200LT tip for coolant removal;

I do my own service on the KLT also and have found some shortcuts! Here is one regarding radiator coolant; The radiator cap is in a tight spot for sure, but taking the tank off is not needed. Get the cap off and use an outboard motor fuel line with bulb in line, for priming the fuel normally. Cut the ends off, that are for quick connect fuel supply to outboards and tada, you have a great syphon for antifreeze from/to your radiator. Actually, unloading the coolant is a no brainer by just taking the lowest hose loose, up front. Unloading the coolant from the plastic resevoir is very cleanly done with the above makeshift syphon I've made and mentioned here. Putting the coolant back into the radiator, is via the syphon/bulb in line hose:). So very easy and no gas tank removal. Maybe you've been here already, done that? Just another idea I made up and worked extremely well. LT's are fun to work on, huh? :) I just completed another, to the frame service on mine and its a job I'm glad to say is not needed often. K bike coolant

Howdy!
BMW coolant is about 14 bucks for a gallon. The coolant is dark blue and has some tackiness to it. I have used BMW coolant for 8 years after having problems with prestone. Even the anti-freeze with all the banners on the label saying it doesn't have the phospherous or other bad stuff does have some!
The first K bike I had needed a new impeller shaft due to my using Prestone. Badly pitted. However I used Emery cloth and sanded some of the roughness out.
When at the bmw dealer ordering the new impeller I bought the bmw coolant.
Getting back to the bike in the garage I added some of the blue stuff to the radiator and watched it leak out of the weep hole on the water pump.
However the next morning the waterpump had quit dripping! So I added the rest of the coolant and put the tank back on.
Figured, y'know that when the new impeller shaft arrives that I would replace the pitted one... NEVER DID!
Still have that $130.00 shaft in my bmw stuff! However the coolant works!

Use BMW Auto coolant

I just changed the coolant in my '99 LT last weekend. I drove to Gulf Coast BMW's shop and they gave me the BMW Auto coolant.

If I had know it wasn't motorcycle specific I could have saved a trip through Houston.

I too would recommend using the BMW brand if you have a BMW auto or motorcycle dealer nearby.
