K1200RS vs Boxer Cup Rep

MarcoB

04 Boxer Cup
K1200rs

Hello amigos -
Was looking into an 03K1200RS, but am a bit leery of the "overheating" issues that people talk about. I live in the Philly area, and while it can get hot and humid here, it's nothing like living in the south or southwest. Any advice or input about that model and year?
Thanks a ton!

I have 92,000+ miles on my '02 K12RS. Never had any heating/overheating issues. Rode 1400+ miles last weekend in IL, MO, AR, TN...low temp 84 degrees high temp 106 degrees.

Owned a '95 K1100LT for seven years and while it never overheated it did cook the rider while in town on hot days.

What heating problems? I have not experienced any heating problems and I ride all year long in Texas.

I have a 2000 K1200RS, which has the same side panels as the '03, and while the heated air from the radiator does rush past your legs, depending on how you position your legs it isn't bad at all. When legs are tight against the plastic you feel very little engine heat, but don't get much ambient air either. When legs are out a little you get a good bit of engine heat. When you push your knees out from the plastic, you look funny, but get little engine heat and a ton of ambient air. I rode my bike down to New Orleans this past July, temps in the upper 90's all the way and humid. Not too bad when rolling, it was hot even off the bike when standing still. Never owned a R1100S, but it would be a nice 3rd bike for my garage!

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen. I had heard someone mentioning this last year - and it did sound unusual - so I thought I'd ask.
...and yes! An R1100S would make a great addition to the garage also. Can't quite decide between the K and the R, if I could just get both...

Think no further the K is the way to go. I made the same trip last week as chasman in near record heat out of ST, Louis 10 miles in one hour, the heat crept up but no problem .I have a boxer and a K bike and the boxer stays on the porch while the big dog runs.

if you're debating between an R11S and a K12RS, the best thing you an do is test ride each. They are both very competent machines, but both feel very different one from the other. Some prefer bricks, others like oilheads better- just a matter of your personal preference. Rarely feeling the need to go over 125 mph, & liking the simplicity, tighter handling & lighter weight of the R11S- that's what i ride.
