Insurance coverage for bike rentals?

Any recommendations for insurance providers who also cover you when you rent a motorcycle? I have insurance and the coverage is fine for me when I ride my R1200GS, but when I'm out of town and want to rent a bike, my insurance provider won't cover me and the rental. That results in me buying pricey optional insurance from the motorcycle rental company (typically Eagle Rider). Does anyone have an insurance carrier that not only covers your bike, but ALSO provides coverage while you're renting? Thanks!

Mine does but its a gov't insurance plan that isn't available to you. You should check with your credit card company to see if they provide any coverage when you use their card to rent a vehicle.

I always wonder about a question like this as most people are really "tripled insured". By triple insured, I'm talking large coverage overlaps that occurs between regular medical insurance, vehicle insurance, perhaps workman's comp insurance and finally, the insurance that "surrounds" a persons activities on a day to day basis.

My Progressive policy specifically covers my liability as well as comprehensive and collision insurance for any "non-owned" (borrowed or rented) bike while it is in my custody.

It is essential to to read YOUR policy as laws vary by state. A competent insurance agent should be able to find an appropriate policy for your needs.

Thanks for the responses! (I live in SF, CA).

Hi Larry: Thanks for the suggestion regarding Progression - I just spoke with a rep (nice lady), and originally she said she didn't think so. Then she asked me if I wanted to wait as she would check. After holding a few minutes she returned and said that their coverage would extend to a rental. They're sending me a quote :)

And fyi -
- My current insurer is: http://www.pacificspecialty.com/insurance-coverage/powersports-insurance/motorcycle-street/
- I asked AMEX (I hold both Gold and Platinum cards) and MASTERCARD (PLATINUM) if they provided motorcycle rental coverage, and they said 'no'.

Enjoy the ride!
