Flashing Brake Lights

My 02 K12RS' "Brake Failure" light flashes with the warning light next to it constantly. Brakes work great and the ABS is functional. The front brake feels mushy before starting the bike but once it starts, pressure is fine. I just bought the bike and was wondering if this is a common issue. Could it be pads, low fluids, or something more serious? Will disconnecting the battery clear codes that might be stored in the computer?
