Conspicuity

Reflection great, but lights are better and both is best !!!

interesting thread but. . .

This thread is interesting and helpful
but also a royal pain in the a$$ to read
with that GIGANTIC picture forcing
everyone to scroll side to side to read each
line on page one. :banghead

Cruisin'

Hey Cruisin,

this is not any different than Chromeheads. 17+" screen with high resolution, and you won't have to scroll left & right :brow

Oh, you mean Page 2, Post #28, robsmoto, pumkin heads!!! :nyah Yeah that is a beach, good thing I have 20" HD-Monitor, I only have to cancel my 'favorites' side-bar. Heheheheha :D

Well, the only numbers on the tape are 0038 over and over again.. not very helpful, but I tried...

Just a question ...

why put reflectivity, which is passive, on a bike for $30, when you can put CHEAP LED lights, which are active, on the bike for a fraction of the cost and in less time ??? :dunno

Lights

Stevie Wonder,

I agree with you. Currently I have Gizmo LED lights which replaced stock light bulb, and added additional BMW Break light. Advised by wrench to be carefull when you add lights at the tail due to ABS.

Secondly, have motolights, and currently adding yellow fog lamps similar to what SFDOC had installed. So I think I've got quite a bit of lights, but additional reflective material should help.

Belive me, if I can put more rear lights, I'd do it.

Check out my photo in an earlier post of the LED lights I added to the rear fender reflector pods. Very inexpensive and excellent running lights for little money. The dramatically enhance the rear visibility. I use reflectivity too, but no way it's makes you more visible than lighting. These lights are incredibly cheap and incredibly easy to install.

BTW, LED's have such a low amperage draw, they really don't affect the sensor for the rear brake light. Regular lights, yes ... LED, no.

From what I have heard there are some limits to the lights that can be on a vehicle that vary by state law. For example some places might not allow an amber rear light others will. However there are not limits on retroreflective stuff.

Both is best

After being told that the reflective tape on my bags was brighter in the fog than the airhead tail light I ponied up for the LED tail light. Great Stuff!!!
My new Stitch arrived with the high contrast Orange/Black combination. I still have the tape on my bags because it works.

Unless you know of something different, I am 99.9% sure that your can put as many taillights as you wish. There are laws about numbers of headlights and red/blue lights on the front of the vehicle to preclude being taken as a police vehicle. I'm sure you've seen some of the Harley's with literally tens of tail/running lights. It's the front of the bike that's restricted and I don't know of too many people loaded up with reflective stuff on the front.

I have been wrong before and I will be wrong again. Perhaps it was just the color thing... you know this Interweb has lots of stuff on it.... :thumb

Sorry! I've re-sized the pix. I used my relatively new iMac to do this and am still learning how to do things.

OT: From my perspective the iMac is not as easy to use or useful as I'd hoped. This will be my last mac. This particular machine - a 20-inch iMac G5 is basically only used to view this and the Advrider forums. I find that a winXP machine is better suited for 95% of my regular work.

Scientific article on mc conspicuity

following is a link to an article that summarizes the results of a case study of conspicuity for motorcycle riders.

http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/reprint/328/7444/857

The conclusions are not surprising. -

"Low conspicuity may increase the risk of motorcycle crash related injury. Increasing the use of reflective or fluorescent clothing, white or light coloured helmets, and daytime headlights are simple, cheap interventions that could considerably reduce motorcycle crash related injury and death."

conspicuity

A lot of people riding motorcycles want to coordinate their outfit, be it red, green or worst of all black. All the same color , bike, jacket, helmet, etc. It looks great , however if you want to be seen (noticed ) you should break it up . The next time you are following a motorcycle see if anything gets your attention, if it is all one solid color mass you will not even see any movement .
Put a white helmet on the rider and you will notice him (her) turning their head, put some reflective material on the back of the helmet and you will notice it even more.

Getting someones attention is what you are looking for.
