Comm/Ipod/mixing

Well, having poked around at tonight's research and seen what I could come up with... I have some questions on headsets, music, and such.

What I have right now is just a nice iPod and ER-6i headphones. I want voice prompting on my gps when I get it (Assume 2610) and alas, the great state of virginia hates radar detectors.

I would also like to plan for the possibility that I may have a rider who I might want to talk to someday or want some bike-to-bike that's more involved than waving the high finger at your buddy for a joke :)

I see that the Autocomm is great for the latter, and even has cell phone options (which I could see coming in handy).... but I really wish to retain and use the ER-6i's because they are awesome and very nice on the ear noise. I also see that the mixit is really good for the former... is there a middle road?

Thanks!

There are probably some middle roads, but I would expect they are not of the quality sound you want.

I have to make a disclaimer here... John Brown of Mixit fame is a friend of mine.

OK, that said, I use an autocom. I have the newer high end pro version but am now not convinced it was the best option for me. I run mp3, cell phone (make sure it rings to headset and has auto answer and voice dialing is nice, not many do), CB, and the V1. I could add more, but don't want the distraction of a GPS (too afraid I will be looking down too often). OK, so now you're laughing thinking "as if what he already has isn't distracting". But none require looking down, they just run.

You may want be able to use your headset speakers as Autocom has a plug in line on their speakers for the headset. I'm not sure but you could look into it.

What am I considering changing? I'm considering adding a mixit to add amplification to the mp3. It will also avoid the spliter Autocom sells and let me give music and V1 the same priority. This is why I say I might have the wrong Autocom. The mid range one has separate volume controls for passenger and rider while the high end has a high low switch, maybe the mid range one won't amplify any further but I wish I knew. I have an amplifier for the cell phone (around $20 at radio shack from Plantronics) as I had two that were not loud enough (Samsung, LG) but my others have been (Sony Ericson, Motorola).

Autocom, all systems half price until they sell off their inventory..

Just bought the Pro-7 yesterday from Morton's..

Why can't you adapt the earphones to the autocomm?? Wouldn't it be just a plug converter.. from the Autocom to the single pin?? And you mentioned talking to a passenger.. earphones won't do much for you there, or does somebody have a work around for that too??

I use a MixIt to power my AutoComm, it works great. Just get the adapter for the Etymotics from AutoComm, while they are on sale.... :thumb

The Mixit takes my XM, my iPod, and weather radio and mixes them together. Then I use the AutoComm for Cell phone and communication.

I am about to start exploring some of the same things.

I was just given an iPod for my birthday, so after riding for 28 years without, will try to plumb music into my helmet.

I've been using a Chatterbox GMRS unit for an intercom for the rare long trip with a passenger, and also for a little bike-to-bike stuff, so since I already have their speakers in my helmet, I will try connecting the iPod to that first, and go from there. At the same time, I will see about running my V-1 output into the speakers.

No desire to be on the phone when riding, and my GPS (Garmin GPSMap 60C) doesn't talk, so no issues there.

If I learn anything of value, I'll post it here.

The Valentine 1. The world's finest radar detector. Not cheap, but good stuff rarely is. If a Scot like Emoto will cough up the money for it, you know it's good.

Ahh, that explains why I didn't know what it was... our SP's have radar-detector-detectors... not good!

I use a Pro-7-Sport.

It sounds like the same one Bouncin Bob has. Do you notice the volume switch problem also?

I'm thining of grabbing one of these while they are on sale but don't have anyone nearby that I can test things out on..

Mine came with the slug for the volume so it was not a problem. Right now my biggest problem is that I need to install a new headset in a new helmet.

Huh

What the heck is all this lingo...I'm totally lost :stick autocomm, Etymotics, pro-7, chatterbox, mixit. Are any of these things something I'll be needing?

These are all audio accessories.

The Autocomm is a motorcycle communication system (http://www.autocomamerica.com/docs/home.cfm)
Etymotics are in ear headphones (http://www.etymotic.com/) their verbage
Pro-7 is a model of the Autocomm
Chatterbox is a competitor of Autocomm. I do not recommend them as the only one I had broke
MixIt is a mixer amplifier for connecting more then one source to one set of headphones or the autocomm (http://mixitproducts.com/) John is a member of the MOA and a good guy so I recommend his stuff. Plus they sound good

So if you are not going to be wiring yourself for sound to the nines you probably don't need it. I do recommend the Etymotics even if you are just going to plug in a personal player they sound good.

Hope that helps.

You need a passive radar detector.. I have the latest 11 channel Cobra.. NOT expensive.. but it detects VG2 (Detector Detector) and is NOT detectabe by either the VG2 or the newer one they are using.. It goes crazy when I cross over the Nice bridge, and has saved me a few times on that side. It doesn't have an audio output, but an easy fix. Took it apart, cut the wires for the SPeaker and attached Headphone leads, now I'm going to cut the headphone leads and attach a 3.5mm lead.

With Autocom do you need an extra amp?

Been checking out the set ups you guys have been talking about, just want to run a satellite radio and cell phone for right now using a tank bag. Don't know if you guys noticed but I posted a question on modifying a Marsee bag for electronics using the powerlet stuff. Was that hard anyone done that as well. So do I need an autocom with like a boosteroo or mix it amp? Also want to use ear buds not speakers does that change anything?
