Can you short out cylinders to balance carbs?

My friend has an R65 with the double coil located under the tank towards the front on the right side. Questions are: does the bike have adjustable points under the canister under the front cover, does it have electronic ignition, and can we short out cylinders to adjust the carburetor balance?

Year?

The year of your bike will determine if it has electronic ignition or not.

If you have BMW electronic ignition, I would not attempt to short it out to balance the carbs, doing so can pop the ignition module.

Before you adjust the carbs are the valves adjusted properly, is the ignition timing where it should be? A poor running airhead does not always mean out of adjustment carbs. Carbs don't really change settings much aside from cable wear and stretch. I mean mixture settings don't change much. Valves are more prone to changing and causing idle problems.

More information would be helpful. St.
