Bikes on the job

I covered the U.S. Open Cycling Championship bicycles race in Richmond VA. yesterday. I was concentrating on the bicyclists, crowd, etc most of the time but managed to get some of the camera and pilot motorcycles in some of the shots.

The mens race started in Williamsburg Saturday morning during a a heavy snow fall and ended in Richmond to a sunny but very cold finish. The pilot/camera cars, bikes followed them the whole route.

It was amazing to see how the 2 up on the bikes, the camera operators had balz.

When I lived in the Chicago area I got to cover the marathon and iron man. Both times I carried a camera man and really had a blast. They asked the MSF instructors for volunteers :)

The marathon was cool. The kid sit backwards on my Buell S3T. Since we didn't cover the leader we got to cruize up and down the pack grabbing shots of folks. We hit 110 down Lake Shore drive with the cops waving at us... VERY COOL.

The Iron Man was a much bigger test of my skills. We not only did lake shore drive, but went through the parks on sidewalks at different times to catch up to runners. Wish I had a GS, but the Buell did fine. Much tougher because of the slow speeds.

I've recently attained a new job in my company. As a regional manager, I'm now riding to most of my locations and am enjoying the heck out of it. First month on the new R12RT I racked up 2600+ miles. Now I'm snowed in :) Crazy.

It was good to see a major network (NBC) give so much coverage to the race. We don't have cable so we miss a lot of what's televised. My husband and I are both former bicycle racers and I am also a former race official.

I absolutely love seeing an old K75S still workin' hard getting the job done. Guessing the super-smooth 3 cylinder K75 engine makes for a more stable camera platform than other options.

I know they use a bunch of old K75s and K100s to cover the Tour de France. I guess once the bike has been modified to accomodate a cameraman, why not keep using it year after year instead of modifying a new bike to do the same thing?
