Sweden's Husqvarna releases new line of street bikes in the US, defying drop in motorcycle sales CNBC Motorcycle sales are dropping, but a high-end Swedish brand is defying the odd
FWIW An interesting article even if the ownership of Husqvarna Motorcycles is botched up. This has led to some interesting comparisons and misconceptions in discussions comparing products with the licensed name but nothing in common beyond that.
Husqvarna is a Swedish company founded 1689 to produce muskets. The armament company founded the motorcycle business in 1903. The company has grown, been partitioned, and is now a brand of multiple companies. The Swedes retained rights to the name and trademarks when they sold the motorcycle division to Cagiva in 1987. Cagiva would be swallowed up by MV Agusta. Cagiva/MV Agusta licensed them and produced motorcycles in Varese Italy. Just after the turn of this century ownership went through bankruptcy, a year in Malaysia then back to Italian receivership. BMW acquired Husqvarna in 2007 and continued to operate it as a separate business until it sold it to a group led by Stefan Pierer, the CEO of KTM AG.
The Swedish roots became a bit more complicated when a group of Husqvarna engineers refused to move to Italy with the sale to Cagiva. They formed Husaberg AB to produce off-road motorcycles. KTM AG purchased Husaberg in 1995 and continued to operate it until recently when reunited with Husqvarna in the KTM AG ownership rollup.
At this time Husqvarnas are built in Mattighofen Austria, corporate ownership is rolled up in some form with KTM AG as the parent company, and the name remains licensed by the current version of Swedish parents.
The sleeper ending in all of this may be SWM-Motorcycles.it. SWM is a small Milan based brand of enduro motorcycles founded in the 70’s. SWM liquidated in 1984. In 2014 with a move echoing Husaberg, Ampelio Macchi, formerly an engineer with Cagiva, Aprilia, and Husqvarna, along with cash from China is resurrecting the SWM name. SWM has acquired the former Husqvarna production plant in Varese Italy.
The facility supplied engine and assembly for Cagiva and MV Agusta. BMW broke it out of that mold and planned to use it for Husqvarna production. The potential production capacity of 200 plus engines per day was a reliable indicator of future potential for Husqvarna and possible additional BMW production. After a great deal of effort and expenditure of many Euros, the plant was shuttered shortly after the sale of Husqvarna to the Stefan Pierer group.
SWM has a skilled workforce and modern plant to produce its motorcycles. Some of the Husqvarna engine designs replaced by KTM engines will find homes in some SWM models while new models for the Varese plant production.
