FWIW: Ahh childhood memories. My father, a die hard Ford man (He put himself thrrough college working in the Twin Cities Ford plant.), traded his 58 Fairlane with a 252 Police Interceptor engine that drank gas at alarming rates for one of the first Falcons to hit town in the fall of 59. Dad’s job had him driving many in town miles. The Fairlane devastated the family budget with its drinking habits. It had to go and the Falcon was the replacement.
It was a huge hit with me. Bullet proof? HA, no way but I was a sprout and the Falcon provided numerous chances to learn about wrenching from my dad. I owe a lot to the I6 engine for memories of time with my father and the skills he passed on.
Like many of our BMW Motorrads, the seat was the first thing he changed. Dad had a bad back and the Falcon had no lumbar support. Off to a local upholsterer for some modifications.
On the road it probably was a slow moving hunk of junk. I didn’t have a license so I could not tell you. I do know dad was more relaxed driving it. The Fairlane brought out the maniac driver side of him. The trip from Madison to family events in Eau Claire were done on a heavily traveled poorly maintained US 12. My sister and I would sit in the back seat and count the cars he was able to pass on each leg of the trip. My mother and father would debate if passing all these cars was worth the extra gas stop on the way up to feed the thirsty Fairlane engine. With the Falcon a car passed was probably pulling off road to repair a flat tire. Mother, to my knowledge, never commented on the fact we could make the trip with a single tank of fuel. I didn’t care. If we had problems it would be another chance to help dad. If not he was a lot more fun to be around when he wasn’t in the 60’s manic pass at almost any cost driving mode.
Long range trips were back on the summer vacation agenda. The Fairlane limited us to wonderful trips exploring various campgrounds a tank away from home. The Falcon allowed us to head back to Superior’s north shore and on into Canada. Six of one a half a dozen of the other with the flip of the coin going to the Falcon for reasons previously mentioned.
Sometime in the mid 90’s I was out walking with a friend. Out exploring the neighborhood they recently moved into, we came across an all white 60 Falcon four door up for sale. Dad’s was a two tone but this white one brought back a rush of memories. I talked with the owner. A Falcon fanatic, he used the car as a parts runner and fun runner while he restored a ‘64 Falcon Futura convertible for his wife and built a seriously good lookin ‘65 black on black Futura 289 hardtop with a highly modified 289.
Nostalgia won out and the three of us piled into the white Falcon and took it for a drive. A brief stint as passenger while the owner explained the car and we traded places. I slipped behind the wheel and was flooded with thoughts as I drove. I chuckled inside. All the reasons the car made sense for my dad to buy and for me to fondly remember were the same reasons I would not make an offer. The test ride did not last long. We pulled into the owners drive. I thanked him very much. We handled the awkward moment when he asked if I was interested in true midwest fashion. All was good.
As we left I handed the seller one of my business cards. ‘If you ever want to sell that ‘65 give me a call. I’m sure we could do business on that one.’ Dad died in ‘63. If he had been around in ‘65 we would have been building one just like this one. The owner smiled and put the card in his wallet. I have never heard from him since.

Depending on who you ask, MotoGP's summer break is either too short, or too long. IT doesn’t seem long ago that the average brand new 1000cc superbike was selling for £9k or less and supersports 600s were below £7k, but those days are long gone and now the bleeding edge of motorcycle technology is likely to set you back a five-figure sum.And the same sort of inflation has hit lower down in the market, too, with bikes that would have been in the region of £5k back in the mid-to-late 2000s now sitting with £7k-plus tags dangling from their mirrors. With increasing numbers of bikes being sold via PCP or HP schemes, for many riders the total is less important than the mont

Many more pictures after the jump to Asphalt & Rubber.
Thursday the latest developments in the Erik Buell Racing bankruptcy saga were released. News releases are intended to inform. Thanks to the sloppy internet searches by many reporting and commenting the silt kicked up in that process resulted in the news taking days to clear. Even as you read this there are many questions to be answered. Here is what we know so far.
Hero MotoCorp has purchased the design and technology consulting portion of EBR.
If you have been following this story the Hero name is familiar. Their original relationship was as a client of EBR for product development of a new 300cc motorcycle and updates to the existing product line up.. The India manufacturer’s product line had topped out at just over 200cc. As the client consultant relationship developed Hero purchased 49 percent of EBR and was hailed as it savior. What many would argue is that it brought about the demise of EBR.
Post purchase EBR continued to do consultant work and took the lead in developing a dealer network. EBR had returned to manufacturing and selling its street bike with a fifty dealer network in the US. Hero was looking for 200 dealers to sell EBR sport bikes and newly spiffed up and expanded Hero Product line. Blame whomever you want, this proved to be too big a task for EBR and led to their seeking protection under Wisconsin laws for a restructuring.
Until a the settlement is able to be read, what Hero actually purchased remains something of a mystery, at least to me. My assumption and that of others is they purchased everything related to the work done for Hero in product development and _?_.
Atlantic Metals Group LLC now owns the EBR manufacturing operations and reportedly intends to start production.
This is the new piece of the survival puzzle for EBR. It is also the piece of the court settlement that resulted in the delay in a formal announcement of the settlement. In chasing down the various back stories it is easy to chase down bunny trails and lose track of the real story; the future of the remaining bits of EBR purchased by Mr Belfer and his company.
Atlantic Metals Group is headed by Bruce Belfer. Mr Belfer’s business roots go back to a lighting manufacturing business founded in 1968 by his father. The Belfer is involved in the manufacturing and sales of various kinds of lighting. Upon the death of Norbert Belfer, company founder and father, Bruce Belfer took over as company head. Belfer is involved in a variety of LLCs with Atlantic Metals Group being used in the acquisition of EBR.
The Milwaukee Sentinel’s online bizjounals.com reports Belfer, “a longtime motorcycle enthusiast”, began his due dilegence by contacting Erik Buell when the receivership announcement was made. In that process he concluded the manufacturing operation remained a potentially viable operation. His assessment was Buell had once again fallen into a 49>51 trap. In his worlds, “In my opinion, what was a viable manufacturing operation had become distracted by a single-customer consulting operation.” The receivership process has taken care of that issue. Now what?
“There’s not a single piece of machinery that I don’t have or can’t buy,” Belfer in quoted as saying in the bizjournals article. “EBR is people, skilled people, craftsmen and innovators. That’s what I was buying. Everything else I can buy in the store.”
In the near term the goal is to reopen the operations in Troy and begin production. To do that he will need to work out a number of external issues such as supplier contracts, dealer network and existing EBR customers/owners. Internally Belfer will take on the role as a very active CEO. Erik Bull will be president of the company and in charge of daily operations. Finally the staff will be brought back on board to begin production. This process should be in full swing as you read this. In the near term all of this is planned to happen in E Troy WI the current EBR base; however, Belfer’s response “too early to say” when asked about any operations moving left a bit of wiggle room for a future move
What has been described so far is very doable. The executive and ownership makes sense by eliminating many of the concerns raised over the years. Erik Buell has long been seen as an engineering innovator but a questionable chief executive. If Buell is able to adjust to the nuances of his new role things should be fine. Suppliers will have access to the information they require to determine their risks for doing future business with EBR. Based on my experience with startup companies, yes this is all doable but with a great bit of effort. That effort is incredibly reward when you are successful and potentially devastating when you are not. Time will tell for EBR.
The receivership sale’s splitting of EBR makes the portion purchased by Belfer’s American Metal LLC potentially viable much quicker if there are successful supplier negotiations this week. With that domino dropped the dealer network is next. Look for them to press the original fifty dealers to sign up again. I suspect the retention rate will be good. Not great but good enough to continue. Relationships with existing customer/owners is next. There are warranty, OEM parts supplies and other issues they will be concerned with. How this group is dealt with will go a long way to making the company viable in the US motorcycle market.
What has not been described is the future for EBR on the development side for business and products.
On a per unit basis the ROI for EBR’s motorcycles were positive. Harley-Davidson did not shut down because they were losing money on Buell. They shut them down in a declining market to move money and attention spent on Buell operations to their core product line survival. The core production had a greater per unit ROI which was what H-D determined they needed at the time. The speculation is during the EBR days the company was able to be profitable enough to survive, return to street production and finally land Hero MotoCorp as a stabilizing investor. However, Hero’s investment was not large enough in comparison with the duties it piled on the EBR team.
The that remains for the new EBR is per unit ROI. Assuming it continues to be positive, how quickly can the company grow unit sales to make the aggregate revenue enough to sustain and grow the company?
Product development and what will that look like is the real question for me. Belfer claims to have purchased a company of innovative people that also makes things. What will those people innovate? How will the balance the demands on resources between day to day manufacturing and sales operations with the speculative expense of new product development. These questions focus on the nuts and bolts side of the issue. The human side is equally important.
Erik Buell is in his sixties. How much longer can he or does he want to remain active? I hope for a very long time; yet, there has to be a plan for the replacement of a ‘keyman’ company figure. How will the new EBR challenge existing EBR innovators and attract new talent to keep the firm invigorated, alive and growing on the human side?
The motorcycling community and press have been asking these and similar questions of Erik Buell/Buell Motorcycles/ and EBR for over thirty years. At the same time all predicting the imminent demise of the company in all its iterations.
Here’s to another thirty years or more of doing the same.

Why Use Fuel Stabilizer? | ANSWERShttp://www.motorcyclistonline.com/why-use-fuel-stabilizer-tech-tips-questions-answers-mc-garage

1992 BMW R1 Desmo: the unborn Bavarian Superbike!
In the late '80, BMW Motorrad started to think about challenge in the recently founded World Superbike Championship.
In order to compete with Honda and Ducati for the crown of the best production-derived racing racing motorcycle, the german manufacturer chose to follow some of its traditional technical guidelines, the boxer engine and the cardan final drive, but they also introduced some essential innovations.
The engine, a liquid cooled twin fueled by a Bosch injection, had a full displacement of 996 cc, in good standing with the technical rules of the WSBK Championships for twins at the time, but the greater surprise is in the DOHC valve train: the four valves per each cylinder were controlled by a chain-driven desmodromic system, as in the other twin-engine which was racing in Superbikes, the Ducati 851/888. The two high compression Mahle pistons (Bore-stroke: 98 x 66 mm) could run at the impressive speed of 11000 rpm, allowing this engine to deliver 140 hp which were transferred to the rear wheel by a 6 speed gearbox and a cardan joint drivetrain, a common solution in the BMW tradition.
The aluminium frame was made by the dutch Bakker Framebouw.
Some technical problems emerged during the testing compounded by the great costs of the project, convinced BMW to give up and stop developing this fascinating Superbike, made in only four prototypes. Only one of them is ridable.
FWIW .... In a 2010 Visordown article the technical problem was described as with the aerodynamics of the bike. Even with a claimed 140bhp on tap the project was canned when engineers failed to achieve the desired aerodynamic results because of those sticky-out cylinders.

In the late 1970s, BMW’s trademark Boxer was on the ropes. In addition to tightening emissions regulations threatening the old slugger, a horsepower free-for-all had just broken out among the Japanese, and without a four-cylinder contender BMW was relegated to the undercard. The Bavarian propeller-heads had to come up with something newer, cleaner, and faster. The result, an inline, water-cooled

This is shaping up to be a Grand Prix to remember,
Hamilton may have the pole but is not a shoe in for the race victory as a result. He will be using the 2016 development Mercedes engine that failed teammate Rosberg. The fastest car yes. Does it have the legs to go the race distance.
Tifosi are going crazy with Raikkonen starting on the grid in P2 and Vettel in P3. Ferrari found a power and aerodynamic combination that put it on the heels of Hamilton’s 2016 spec car and ahead of a gaggle of 2015 spec Mercedes cars. Can they get off the mark when the race goes green? When they do, can they keep their low downforce rides on track and in front?
Rosberg leads the gaggle of 2015 spec Mercedes powered cars behind Scuderia Ferrari on the grid list. The press is making a big deal of Ferrari splitting the Mercedes team on the grid. If I were Rosberg, the Ferrari / Williams sandwich I find myself in the middle of would have me worried. Massa and his Williams are a serious challenge to the four cars ahead of them on the grid chart. The first one they need to drop a spot is Rosberg and on race day Massa is capable of doing that.
This is shaping up to be a Grand Prix to remember, Fools predict race day results. Often I am a fool but will quickly admit I haven’t a clue who will win this one. I do not see Hamilton leading pole to checkered flag on race day. Three options.
Hamilton and Vettel get of the mark and begin an epic battle to show who is the better driver. The rest of the field sorts themselves out behind this struggle.
In option two the grid is filled with over eager drivers forgetting you don’t win the Grand Prix by being ahead at T3 of L1. This results in cars and carbon fiber strewn all over the track, a full course yellow at best, and a decent race among the survivors. We may not recognize many of the cars and driver combinations but the racing could be good.
Option three is my love/hate option. Hamilton and Vettel give us an exciting duel to open the race. Hamilton's 2016 engine fails him leaving Vettel in the lead but not with the win. The Titanic struggle between them leaves Vettel out of sync with the rest of the racers. After a key pit stop leaving him fractionally behind he yields the lead to the trio of Raikkonen, Rosberg and Massa. I am a Tifosi, yet in this trio I would put my sheckles on Massa to come out on top this weekend.
Having said all that and jinxing the Italian GP in the process it is safe for you to go riding on this Labor Day weekend. I will be back with the real race results next week.
