Anybody got an iPod?

I just got my wife a Nano for her birthday. That thing is so freakin' cool. I might have to buy myself one, too.

iPodding

Gang:

They work great, especially with noise-canceling earbuds.

I've got an iPod shuffle I'm tooling up (simple, 120 songs, small) that will go right on my 'stitch.

Buddy has the big 40g model, loves it. Specifically, his wife loves it!

Check out the new nano Apple came out with, if you must have the best first.

Battery mainly an issue on older iPods, not newers ones.

I really LOVE my XM radio. If you're looking for a strictly music, news, and WEATHER solution, it can't be beat.

I have to agree...I have a small (512mb) mp3 player i used for a while, but having just installed XM before my trip, i am forever converted and would only use the mp3 player if were going thru tunnels all day. Tons of channels...comedy channel is great (though it does tend to repeat if you listen 7 days straight :)), cnn headlines is also good, catch the news while you ride. Tunes stations are okay as well.

I'm carrying about 25GB of music in mine these days.

neato.

You're a better man than me. I got 12Gb out of 20Gb filled and ran out of downloading gas.

I got the 60 gb iPod photo. Loaded 459 CD's onto it, and found it used about 23 gb. Guess I have lots of room to grow! One of the advantages of the whole thing, that really doesn't even require an iPod, is that iTunes is a great way to catalog and keep track of your music!

Ditto on the 60gig, with a ijet RF remote which is sweet.

With the RF remote you can bury that sucker anywhere you can run a wire for headphones. I usually use a short extension either from inside the tankbag or under my seat so it can be unplugged, me not teathered to the bike.

Later versions of iPODs got pretty tricky with digital rights management... the thing knows whether you got the song from a buddy who got it off of Napster/Kazaa, etc... or whether you ripped it from a CD you already owned.

So what does it do with this knowledge?

I have finally had to rotate through. Last year I decided I was going to do a download of my albums, alphabetically.(http://www.bradfordbenn.com/cdlist.htm sorry about the color scheme - mid update)

I knew that I would fill the poor 20GB machine. So once it got full I decided to listen to it sequentially and then delete items as I listened to them. I am currenty up to Limp Bizkit. It is difficult to actually stay dedicated to listening to them in order. But I figure if I own I should listen to them. Every so often I find something I completely forgot about.

Wow you guys have a lot of music. According to the I-Pod I have just shy of 4 days of music and I am still only using a fraction of the 20GB...On a 4 day ride I find I listen to that about a day or so and the rest of it...XM radio...lol Maybe I should have something other than 4 days of Mozart eh?...lol

Actually, that seems to be the one weakness of iTunes, or the software it accesses on the web to fill in artist and album information. It doesn't seem to know the difference between artist and composer, particularly for classical albums. I have to go in and correct a lot of the information, which is also not easy on iTunes, if I ever want to find a particular selection by Mozart or Bach, etc.

I also noticed that nothing ever gets categorized as Bluegrass. So I had to create that genre and then re-label all of my bluegrass stuff.

Oops, sorry to go off topic there.

It won't let you load the songs. What you have to do is burn the songs to CD audio format, re-rip them, and then you can re-load.

DAMHIKT.

Great collection! Anybody who owns "The Repercussions Of Angelic Behavior" obviously admires Bob Fripp and all-things-Crimson, and is ok by me!

I've had an iPod since 03. The original 20GB model and it's never given me an ounce of trouble. Haven't yet purchased a mobile audio solution, but I've ripped @ 52GB of music and use iTunes daily.

As for the song and artist tags (from the Gracenote Database site) for Classical artists, try using the MusicBrainz Tagger or for MAC iEatBrainz! which can allow you to manipulate and potentially correct the tags in your collection. I personally find that I'll often go in and manually correct tags; for Classical, I like to have the Composer in the Composer tag and the Group or Performer in the Artist's tag.

Sorry for being OT; but I thought this info might be helpful.

Excellent. One of my big beefs is inconsistent tagging. I know iTunes uses the Gracenote stuff, but sometimes, I get some wierd results.

Tags are a big pet peeve of mine. But since I am playing them in Order, it has not been a huge problem - yet.

Beware of Hard Drive Players

Beware of hard drive players and the bike you ride. My hard-drive Archos Gmini cannot handle the vibration of my Airhead. No matter where I put it (jacket, tankbag) or how it's powered (battery, bike), it will eventually shut itself down, presumably due to excessive vibration. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes, sometimes it takes 45 minutes.

Then might I suggest:

Another Recomendation is a great community-based program called Last FM from the folks who created the Audioscrobbler music-profiling plug-in. While it won't correct any of your tags, it's an interesting way to see your music listening habits graphed out (and see who else, globally, shares your esoteric musical tastes).

My profile is here, for anyone who's interested.

Hey! What are you trying to do to me! I'm trying to convince the wife that this is the solution to my problem:

There are some interesting tracks that you have there. Boccherini? I've only heard about him in my music history classes.
