An oil change and a Surprise!

It warmed up to a sweltering 17 degrees today and I could hardly wait to get out to the garage and do an oil change. Everything was going very well until I noticed what appeared to be some cut wires that were under the alternator cover and hidden by the skid plate. After unwrapping the electrical tape I could see that these were no accidentally severed wires. Someone had soldered the white and brown wires together.

The wires are on the seated drivers right hand side. Tracing them forward leads to a connector and moving along into a thicker wire bundle that's routed adjacent to the alternator regulator. I did not trace the wires aft. My best guess is that these wires lead to the side stand switch. There is a photo (4.29d) of that wire connector on page 2*8 of the Haynes manual (BMW F650 Singles -'94 to 07) that is in that exact location.

Has anyone come across this before? I'm thinking maybe this is a hack for a defective side stand switch. If this is the case, I will leave things as they are.
