I found this video on YouTube - the cleaning method shown would seem to apply to aluminum engine cases. Based on the video one uses 100% Vinegar (which is acetic acid), polysorb, and petroleum jelly (vaseline) in a mixture. The video shows this stuff as a paint remover, so some caution might be in order. Even though it is "vinegar", I would suggest wearing some gloves and eye protection. [Note: I have not tried using this concoction, nor have I made up a batch.]
I could only find 99% vinegar on the 'zon and the polysorb is a bit costly for a small amount. Vaseline is fairly cheap.
