99 RT 1100 speedometer/odometer quit

No warning speedometer/odometer quit. What are the usual causes and what usually needs replacing. Is it normally the cable or what other parts have a habit of breaking? Have a trip to NC very soon. Might help to know how fast/how far I'm going. Thanks for any input.

ID really K but...

With my 2000 RT, just as others suggested, it was the gear at the wheel rather than the speedo itself. A much less expensive fix. Hope yours is as easy...and cheap

Welcome to the forum skid:wave

You can remove the connector at speedo end and rotate wheel to check cable for movement.

If it had been right after a front tire change, would check the drive unit on front axle as previpusly mentioned.

Have had one break right where the end was swedged to the cable on a R11R on the speedo end.

Most likely cause is the cable has become loose and slipped off of the speedo head. If you just had front wheel off it could be an issue with the drive gear, but check the cable first.

Thanks guys, appreciate the tips. Reading the Clymer manual now on how to take out the windshield/dash to check behind the speedometer. Let you know how it goes...

I have seen several such failures on R1100s and every one has been at the bottom end. And that is the easy end to get to. A few were broken cables - right at the bottom where the curve is the tightest. Others were a failure of the dogs on the drive unit to engage with the wheel. The metal ring in the wheel might be bent, or the nylon dogs in the drive unit might be worn, or both.

I have a 2001 R1100S, I had the same issue. It turned out the ring gear inside the final drive had jumped out of its groove. I was able to pop it back in with my pinky through the hole where the sending unit goes. I'm not sure what years they used the final drive sending unit.

You don't have to remove the windshield or dash to check the speedo cable under the speedometer. You can see it from below and reach up from below to tighten or loosen the cable end from the housing. It will be easier if you remove the left side fairing but even that isn't required.

Speedo/odo problem R1100

That happened to me on a trip on an R1100RS. In that case the nut holding the cable housing to the back of the speedometer had just worked loose. On the RS it was a little PTA to get it properly tightened again, but an easy "motel parking lot" repair.
