95 K1100LT Runs rough 3000-4000 rpm checking plugs first.

Yikes so I went to town but just missed the locksmith. 90 degree weather, vented jacket still pretty hot and the engine was baking me. Reminded me of my 1050 triple sprint, it cooked me in slow traffic too. Meanwhile seems the injection needs some love as I'm getting surging/coughing trying to hold a steady throttle at 3000-4000 rpm range. Topped off tank and stumbled home. Engine died while idling when I was lining it up for the garage and couldn't kick it over. Pushed it in and put a charger on the battery showed at 95%. So a few things to look over. I ordered some iridium plugs so will look at the old plugs and the wires to be sure that's not an issue. (Read about the resistance discussion, thanks.) Fuel rail and injection were gone through but it was 2 years ago and she (Wife of second owner and also experienced rider,) didn't ride much after that. So a little research and professional tune up is in it's near future. The tires are pretty grabby now with proper pressures, I expect this will be fun in the twisties once I get the weight in the chair and I get used to this beastie. If plugs don't solve the surging, any advice on injection?
 
A starting point would be fresh gas with a dose of Napa BG-44, or Seafoam. Fresh plugs are a good idea and check the air filter and airbox to make sure a critter didn’t nest there while the bike was parked. Check the simple stuff first.

Yep my thoughts as well. Look at the old plugs to see what they tell, Already have fresh gas. I looked through what I unpacked into my fire cabinet and don't have that sort of cleaner left so I'll go to my local Napa and try that stuff out. Really hoping I don't discover a critter but appreciate the heads up. It's been awhile since I had an older bike or car. Ah the joys of classics.
 
Like DeVery said - start with the easy stuff. Since it's been sitting a while, I'd fully drain the tank, put in some fresh 91, and also use a red bottle of Iso-heet to rule out any accumulated water. Check the airbox and rubber hoses that lead to each cylinder from the air box too!
 
Well, still couldn't get engine to turn over, seemed weak battery so attached a different floating anti sulfating charger that kept my other bikes in good shape but ordered a battery for good measure. Meanwhile pull the loose motronic box out of the way to look closer and find a floating loose cable near ground terminal! Going to look through the books and schematics. I see a few other accessory wires tagged on there so may have some cleanup and tracing to do. I know the heated seats in the chair were not hooked up and I see some cable leads cut along the Sidecar bracket. I'll post a couple pics by the battery lug. I wonder if the alternator was overworked for accessories. Glad I didn't try to join that cross country trip! :eek:
