86 k100 whistling noise

pfetter

1986 K100RT, 135000 miles
I have a 86 K100RT that seems to make a whistling noise or whining noise when idling or it can get louder when driving as RPM's increase. I heard people talk about the splines needing lube but would that be the case if it makes this noise when idling. I did not know if it could be a problem or just another BMW original noise. Thanks

The bikes are named "K-whiners" for a reason. The gears on the output shaft/crankshaft are responsible for the noise. Normal, and has nothing to do with the need (or not) for a spline lube.
