85 K100 - disintegrating cap of transmission switch

After taking out the swing arm, I found the top (rubber?) cap of the transmission switch was coming apart....then when I picked at it a little, it readily disintegrated, exposing wires underneath. Oh joy. I suppose from decades of being covered in grease?
Looks like EME & Max have new ones for $209 and it looks like a straightforward replacement.
But if there's anything I should know before doing this replacement, I appreciate the advice!

No longer intimately familiar with the Ks, but - if it's accessible, can you just pull off the rest of it, cut a piece of strong plastic into a circle of the right diameter, and use a silicone bonding adhesive to stick it on there?
Cheaper than $209... and check that there's no oil inside the switch, 'cuz it'll get intermittent (if it isn't already) and that indicates the seal on the tranny is leaking.
