2nd gear slip

On my 2002 R1150RT, transmission drops out of 2nd gear, to neutral, when not under load. Generally does not when accelerating. Of late, an additional problem shifting out of 2nd to 3rd (though not a problem dropping to neutral or 1st) when cold. I suspect an issue with shifting forks or drum - and major bucks. Any chance of curing this without going broke?

Welcome to the MOA forum and belated happy birthday too. Sorry to hear about your transmission problem. I don't know whether you will go broke or not but this problem is not likely to fix itself without a bit of cash injected. Since your profile does not indicate where you are it's hard to recommend a shop or club nearby that could help but Anton Largaider is a contributor here and on the Airheads list and is a highly knowledgeable and reputable repair shop. He knows oilhead transmissions. His shop site is here:

PS: Lots of threads, how to do and even videos on how to remove and replace your own gearbox which can save a lot of time and money. Shipping gearboxes for repair is not uncommon.

Values

I've got a quote from a reputable shop, well-known BMW mechanic in my area (Montana), that may push up to $4K. That's probably close to the present value of a 2002 1150 RT, and leaves me the devil's choice. I guess that would double the value of the bike to me, but not to anyone else. I'll peck around and see if I can find some of those videos mentioned; I have a Clymer manual but am concerned pulling the gear box may be beyond my skill level. Anyway - thanks for the reply and the suggestions.

I just finished watching a video by Chris Harris on pulling transmision and replacing clutch. Pretty good, he shows the steps required for the job. Search him on You Tube.

Thanks, gents - I'll take the tour of the videos and see if I can scare myself off, or not. 20 below this AM, so won't think about garage work for a while.

That's an unusual problem for an 1150. There is a shifter component that we were advised to always replace due to a design weakness, but I can't say that it would cause the problem you are experiencing.

I have a lot of 1150 transmission parts and the shifter components are not in demand, so it could be a pretty cost-effective repair (under $1000 including shipping) if you pull the transmission yourself. A used eBay transmission would be cheaper, but as I often say you already HAVE a used transmission. If you do decide to get a used one, look for one having the serial number starting with J. They have updated internals.
