2nd gear not staying engaged -Suggestions?

My 04 1150 has a problem with second gear that seems to be getting worse. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

When upshifting into second one of three things occurs:

1) It stays in gear as it should until time to upshift to 3rd (85% of the time)

2) After accelerating a brief distance it suddenly drops back into neutral (about 10% of the time and seemingly getting worse), causing over revving of the engine and great embarrassment when it happens in front of a biker filled outdoor cafe :bolt

3) It stays in gear but the shifter feels sort of 'stuck' and I have to re-clutch and pull up the shifter a couple of times before it will shift to 3rd. If I just clutch and pull up on the shifter as one normally would nothing happens; it just stays in second. (about 5% of the time).

No problems whatsoever with other gears. When downshifting everything works just like it should; has never jumped out of any gear.

When the bike was about a year old I had issues with it suddenly jumping out of 6th even after I'd been in that gear for miles. BMW replaced the gearbox under warranty and that issue never occurred again.

Number 3 issue has been around for couple years, Number 2 started last year and seems to be getting worse.

Anyone else with these issues? Any ideas for fix?

I don't know if this will help but I had the same problem with my 96 R1100R. My first thought was that it was a trannie problem. My brother in law was over from the UK at the time so I asked him to take the bike for a ride. He has a lot more experience than I do with bikes. Anyway when he came back I asked him if he had any issues with 2nd gear popping back into neutral, he said none at all. This obviously led me to believe it was my inexperience that was causing the problem. Since that day it has'nt happened. Sounds silly but there you go, those are the facts. I guess I do focus a little more when shifting from 1st to 2nd, that is the only difference I can think of.

P.S. When it does slip out of 2nd you can simple lift the shifter back up and hold your foot there till you are ready to shift to 3rd. Hopefully that will help eliminate the embarrasing moments:ca

Thanks CB. It does seem that if I really concentrate its a bit better; but not eliminated. I've been riding a long time and never had this problem until this bike. As for the embarrassing moments like I stated above its actually IN 2nd as I may go 10 to 15 yards or so before it pops back into neutral. Just baffled by this.

Is your gear oil synthetic.

I've run into problems with the synthetic being almost to slick and the bike shifting rough and wanting to slip out of gear. On the advice of a friend of mine I switched to conventional 80-90 weight and she shifts smoother and doesnt slip out of gear.

PS I have a 99 R 1100 R.

Raven,
Read this article on Anton's site:

Sounds a lot like worn shift fork.

Hmmm, Maybe MJM is onto something. I do indeed run synthetic in it. Use the Redline brand. Maybe it'd be worth switching back to dino to see what if any difference it'd make.

Nope,
It won't help a bit. Sorry.
