2011 RT - sidecase doohickey won't retract. RH side

OR maybe it's called the thingamabob, but whatever you call it, it doesn't retract. The little strap retractor inside that's attached to the rear wall of the sidecase.

I didn't do anything unusual, just opened the sidecase. When I went to close it the gizmo didn't retract the strap.

I took a photo of the item, and typed the numbers into Bob's BMW microfiche with no results.

JDEHA 4 0750 12 00 90 is what's showing on the item.


EDIT - I might have found them on the microfiche. Under Body Fairings; Case, Lower Part. Item 9. Cover Holder. It that what I'm looking for?

I don't have a clue what you are talking about, but ... it's a BMW, so $31 is dirt cheap. Buy two or three just in case.

I've had a couple of those constant force springs come apart on me also.
Seems that I let the case cover drop down with a bit too much force and the fabric strap separated from the holder.
Since I'm cheep and 100 miles from a dealer, I was able to take apart and put together properly.
See that metal clip? It is important. Spring will come flying out if you let it, wear safety glasses!
Had to figure out the correct rotation of the spring and start winding.
Hold on tight to the spring.
After a few attempts they went together just fine and still work.

If you don't have the time, get a new set. The other will fail soon enough.

Had a bud asking how to repair one standing in my shop...when I said to be careful with the clip from across the room, it came a nano-second too late

When attempting to rewind the spring, does it go clockwise or counter-clockwise? ]

Where does the bent end of the spring connect and where does the opposite end(with the hook) connect to?

I tried it going clockwise, got the spring in there tightly wound around the center piece and the hook end attached to the inner part of where the strap is attached and reinstalled, but it still failed to retract.

If I do end up getting a new one (or pair of new ones as suggested), I'm guessing the metal clip stays on until the piece is loosely screwed onto the sidecase?

sidecase doohickey reassembled

Here's my two cents. The doohickey on my sidecase (2013 R1200RT) would not retract. I removed the doohickey, cleaned the flat spring and the leash with dry paper towels, and reassembled it on the bike. It still won't retract easily, but will retract if I tap my fingers on the doohickey housing.

Kinda strange how that happens.

If this happens to others, what's the fix without buying new parts?
