1993 K75S Instrument Cluster Bulb-to-LED Replacement

I finally got around to replacing the incandescent bulbs inside my instrument cluster with green LEDs that I purchased as a kit two years ago from a guy who calls himself Duck. Replacing the bulbs is straight forward if you know the secret code for the removing the instrument cable from the back.

I own the BMW repair manual, Hynes and a Clymer manual and I could not find in any of these manuals a detailed description of how to detach the instrument cluster from its cable. Since my entire bike is apart for steering bearing replacements, I took a few pictures of the culprit and will post some pics of the task (as soon as I figure out how I posted pics the last time - photo bucket :scratch).

Instrument "Cover"

BMW labels the weighted "lead-like" backing of the instrument cluster as "cover". Is the objective of adding weight to the instrument cluster to stabilize the instrument cluster and make it more "readable" to the rider? Seems like a lot of weight to bear at the end of the headlight bracket.

Anyone come up with a better, lighter version of this cover?
