1987 K100RS- Flickering Headlight and HUD

I was riding tonight and noticed that my headlight and the backlights of my HUD began to flicker. I began to analyze what was going on, and it appeared that the lights would only flicker above 4,000 RPM, no matter what gear I was in. There was no change in engine performance, just the lights flickering.

I limped home, keeping my RPM's under 4,000. It was about a 45 minute ride home on the highway, so every few minutes I would take it above 4,000 RPM to see what would happen. Up until about half way home, the lights would continue to flicker above the 4,000 RPM mark. At about the half way point of my trip home, the tach edged above 4,000 and there was no flickering. I kept going a little higher, no flickering. I then was able to take it all the way up to about 6,000 RPM (which was about 85 mph), with no problem.

Once I got off of the highway, I was able to use a lower gear to get to about 7,000 RPM, again, no problem.

Can anyone theorize as to why the lights flickered in the first place? Or why the lights stopped flickering later in the trip?

Sounds like it could be your starter brushes and commutator are getting dirty (yes, really).

Several circuits are grounded through the starter brushes (yeah, wierd).

One of the symptoms of a dirty starter is flickering lights. It then progresses into intermittent starting.

Good chance he is right. And the intermittent starting thing is really a PITA. (Was it 98lee who clued me in to backing up the bike in a higher gear to temporarily solve the problem?) But cleaning up the brushes and commutator is maybe a 1 hour job if you are not a wrench and very much worth doing or having done.
