1985 K100RS odometer gears.

While winter keeps me from riding and to stave off a potential problem, I thought it would be a good idea to think about replacing the odometer gears. I don't know that they have been done but someone correct me if I am wrong about something. The original gears had a lubricant on them, correct? My gears look like they have something shiny on them, much like a clear lubricant would look. I have attached an image.

Also, there is a clear plastic slotted screw that goes up against the shaft that protrudes from the right side of the odometer. What is this for and what is its proper position?

My trip meter has always been a little dodgy when resetting to zero. If I don't do it just exactly right (I know what to do now) then the tens digit will stay halfway between numbers every time it cycles. It works but stays in between full numbers. Is there anything that can be done about that or is it a matter of replacing the bank of wheels?

Thanks,
Tom

Odometergears.com offers a complete set of replacement gears. I just had to get into mine this past summer. I can't address the clear screw except to say that it is probably a way to set side load on the shaft. I would think that very little or no contact with the shaft. I don't remember the screw at all. Mine is an early ('85) model.

The lubrication from the factory is blamed for causing the gears to deteriorate over time. Odometergears says use no lubrication with their gears so I didn't. Their gear are made of a different plastic, maybe 3D printed? Working great so far.

BTW- your gears look fine. I would just disassemble and clean them, put back together dry. Mine had a whitish film on them (the deteriorated lubrication I suppose) and teeth broken off.

I think that once you have it sufficiently apart you can correct the 10th's by slipping the driven gear over one tooth.

Got into my '85 K100RS speedo gears once with some newly made parts kit.

Made good progress on my own however I swapped the bad gear on the trip meter from the 10s place to the 1s place so gas station fill up resets would only be off +- 5 miles, not +-50 miles. Bike has 204,000 now and it's very workable.

The mistake I made on the first attempt was to not replace the smallest drive gear. Wouldn't you know it, a few hundred miles later it broke in two. The instructions call out for you to get a pair of dikes/side cutters and use them on the metal sleeve that is left on the shaft at 90 deg. "cuts". I was really hesitant to do that but it worked. Then you support the opposite end of the shaft and press the gear on. Happy to say it worked.

My fairings are still off, so I think I'll remove the instrument housing and do it.
