1985 K100 Basic - fitting the air filter

I removed the air filter housing so I could replace the gas lines. So I figured it was a good opportunity to replace the air filter.
But the new air filter directions (K&N ) instructs me to push the filer 1 inch beyond the left side of the housing to engage the left side edge....that's impossible with the gas lines resting flush on the left side of the housing. There's no room to push the filter beyond and pull back.
Is there any sleight of hand or trick to getting the air filter to sit right in the housing? It's a bear.

Thanks!

Did you remove the two clips at the rear as well as the one at the front? Since I don’t tend to ride in dusty areas, I don’t change that large air filter as frequently as the manual recommends. Therefore I sometimes forget about the front clip, which makes my task impossible and frustrating.

With all the clips removed and wiring pushed out of the way, (and a few choice words), filter does slide in. Easy, no, but doable.

Thanks, Paul! Yep, got the upper housing all the way off (had to move top & bottom of housing out of the way to get to the regulator & attached gas lines).

But getting filter edges properly engaged on the housing seems mechanically impossible....

Clearly I'm doing something wrong.

Maybe - just maybe - turn the filter 180 degrees fore to aft. My memory is fuzzy but I might recall that the side edges are different.

Lee????

Thanks, Paul - it seems the filter is symmetrical, so not sure that'll do it, but I can try. Seems weird there is no edge on the underside....it's just a flush surface.

Paul - you were right. K&N sent the completely wrong filter, though it's designated on their site for the 85 K100. FFS.
Sorry to waste your time!

IMHO—Take advantage of the opportunity to snag a refund and buy the BMW filter instead, or its equivalent Mahle from Beemer Boneyard. Brick-k bikes don’t suffer from OEM airflow restriction so there’s no benefit to a supposedly more free-flowing filter, and the BMW or Mahle filter do a better job of stopping particulates from getting to your engine.

Best,
DeVern

Thanks, DeVern - waiting for K&N to reply to my request for refund :)
And put the Mahle filter in there today. Fit like a glove. GTG!
