Nice find....Looks like its been in a barn for quite sometime..

It was in a garage for 15+ years, the last 5 heated. I am going to do some of the same thinngs you did. Pull the topend and trans, rebuild the carbs this winter.

A fine garage patina like that takes time.

Old bikes are money pits. You can throw money in them for years and when you're done (and you NEVER are done), you still have...an old bike.

It's all in what makes YOU happy. $2200.00 for a 36 year old motorcycle is NOT a bad deal. Look at how happy the fellow is now with parts all scattered about and cleaned up. His wife should be gratefull he's not out playing poker at a bar somewhere blowing wads of cash on pocket aces.

I'm hopelessly mired in the technology of the 70's myself. As a result, my opinions don't really count for much these days.

Somehow, the Universe nods when we do something like pull JB weld off an airhead gear box. Maybe doubly so since it no longer is in the hands of a moron.

Nice work. All is right with the world again.

wow
that would be a picture I would show my wife, after i pressure washed it
after I had a spark and fire, and she said, cool, nice scooter
then I could pull it apart to restore it
not all of us, meaning others then you me and a few others here, that can see a diamond
must of been a hay barn of a wood workers shop

Wish I had the time/money to do some of that kind of work to mine. First thing on the list after the current list of stuff to do: redo the heads.

phil, (apart from rubber and necessary pieces) you should buy used, man! Your bike is used, might as well get a good deal on used parts. Bring the old pieces back to life.

gnavecky's is in better shape than my R75/6 was when I got it (just imagine rust, cat pee, and wasp nests). Then again, I paid for it by mowing my friends parents yard every other week for a season. I plan on doing that for their R90/6.

I did try to purchase used in the beginning. But after seeing the prices I said the heck with it. If I am going to rebuild this bike I only wanted to do it once....My problem was I wanted to do the rebuild and do the whole bike the first time. I thought about doing a little at a time..It would have been years before it was finished or not at all...

Way to go, Phil!

I have to admit, I've put a fair amount of money into 2 separate R100's the past couple of years. This hasn't been a restoration effort, more of a "fix everything that needs fixing because somebody ignored it for years" kind of an effort.

I may do paint some day, I don't know. Right now, I'm too busy riding them.

I'll also give you a :thumb for using new parts. Might just as well, in my opinion.

So, you've put a bunch of $'s into an old BMW. Some people put a bunch of $'s into golf, or fishing, or jewelry, all stuff that you can't ride!

Hat's off to ya, keep the pics coming!

bought this one off the ibmwr website, $2250.00, which i thoght was a great price for a decent /5. 1972, 37990 miles, starts, runs, rides great. all electrics work, neat bike. this was in "as bought" condition with no cleaning, rinse off, or anything. was having too much fun riding it!

What'd you use on the cases and final drive? They look great.

Happich..Simichrome polish..I purchased it at a local Harley dealer. Before I used the polish I used Simple green and WD-40 and alot of elbow grease. I was told to keep it looking new to use WD-40. Simichrome is a soft polish used to clean aluminum, chrome and silver. This also made my front rim look brand new. I had to replace my rear rim due to a crack.

OK, cool. What'd you use? A brass brush or something?

That's cool to see. Thanks!

Phil,

I completed my R60/5 project this past Spring but, after seeing what you are doing with your cases/aluminum parts, I'm thinking I may need to redo some of my aluminum parts surfaces.

Your project looks great! Keep it going!

More pics please.

:lurk

I didnt want to use anything abrasive. I used the wifes dish scrubber.I used a toothbrush for the small areas. I tried to find the box it came in with no luck. I also didnt want a shine..Just a real clean look..KBasa...did you ever look at the 75/6?
