12 V Acc Jack

It's amazing to me how little space there is on any M/C to add some gadget. With WAY too much work I got a 12 V cigarette lighter jack mounted to power my GPS. Simply an aluminum plate sawed to shape, bent, drilled for lighter jack, and U-bolted to fairing framework.

Man, your bike came with an accessory plug and all you needed to do was convert to cig lighter, which can be done with simple accessories such as ...

... which you could graft on to the end of your current power chord and then you'ld have a connector that worked both on your bike and in your car.

Is the jack waterproof?

Coming right up. The Big Brown Truck just brought me some stuff to turn it out of. A new pair of Vega boots too.

Creston, Iowa? Crest Riders (?) used to come down to the Holt, Missouri TT Scrambles and The Saint Joe Highway 59 hill climb? Didn't Creston have a hill climb back in the 60's?

I've seen Oilhead RTs with a factory accessory socket in the dash.

My '02 RTP has a factory-installed BMW/Powerlet outlet on the left side of the dash.

A prior owner added a 2nd BMW/Powerlet outlet along with a traditional SAE/cigarette lighter plug on the right side of the dash. They attach to the underside of the dash, and hang down into the empty space above the fairing. If they were on the other side of the dash, they'd be right over the glove box lid (auxiliary battery compartment on my RTP).

You can see them in this picture - they are just below the grill for the right stereo speaker.

My 2000 r1100rt has the in dash powerlet but i dont have one under the seat area. I have a plug, white two prong i think, that is visible just under the stand assist handle. Any body know what that might be? I haven t checked it with a volt meter. Just got the bike this summer.

Officerimpersonator-
I like the paint job on your rt-p. Did it cost much?
Also, have you ever thought about removing the rear crash bars? I'm unsure about mine, but I do not have any of the lights back there either.
I also noticed you have the extra mirrors. I've thought about that as well, but I don't know if i want all that cluttering up the front...
I was going to mount lights on my front bars as well.
It looks nice-
Good job.

+1 on the GS mirrors and more...1100rt

I added the GS mirrors to my RT and wish I'd done it years ago. two mirrors on each side means I can see the wicked drivers out to get me much earlier.

When I changed my battery last, I added a second aux plug direct to the terminals and tucked it under the saddle - out of the way, but ready for future long haul needs.

I moved my auxilary outlet from the dash (left side) and installed it in the glove box, which allows me to charge a phone or Ipod in the locked glove box, safe & sound, overnight. :dance

Hope we're not accused of trying to hijack the thread here ;)

Paint is BMW stock "alpine white". My RTP was a dealer demonstrator between 2002-2003. When the twin-spark 2004 came out, my bike was yesterday's newspaper.

The dealer sold it to a private party in 2004 with 3k miles on the odometer. He turned it into a Iron Butt Rally bike, eventually consigning it to the local BMW dealer at18k miles. Next owner purchased the bike from Ride West BMW and put 3k miles on it before selling it to me through a Craigslist ad.

When I bought her in 2007, she had 23,500 miles on the odometer. Now she has 79k miles. She (Helga) doesn't get ridden as much now that I've got the GSA and a 7 year-old son who loves to ride with dad, but when the weather is bad, she's my daily commuter.

I love the crash bars - front and rear. I had a gas station tip-over not long after acquiring, and the bars protected the painted plastic from impact with the ground. Besides, part of the reason I got the bike was because there is no more conspicuous a motorcycle than a police motorcycle, and the bars are all part of the image. Motorists who think I might be a cop (1) see me and (2) won't do stupid things around me. I've had plenty of motorists doing stupid things around me immediately stop doing stupid things around me the moment they catch sight of me. By 'stupid things', I mean weaving around traffic, talking on the cell phone, eating a bowl of cereal, reading a book, etc.

My stalk mirrors are mandatory as my body mirrors are useless when I'm using the handlebar covers. The handlebar covers droop down to obscure the mirror's view when the mirrors are pointed back. Thus, I've angled my body mirrors to cover my blind spots on either side, and I use the stalk mirrors for looking behind. With four mirrors, I can get 180 degrees of vision behind me and to my sides.

Picture of bike with white 'city' lids. You can also see how the handlebar covers obscure the view from the side mirrors.

I wonder if the hill climb was in Crescent Iowa. Crescent is in the Loess Hills in western Iowa northeast of Omaha?

That plug is for a BMW accessory jack like the one on your dash but it mounts to the frame down there and plugs right in to the connector you see there. Comes as a kit from BMW or you can make your own. If you test it you will find it is 12VDC and on all the time. Typically used for passenger accessories like heated clothing.
