Spline photos anyone?

Here are photos of the splines on the rear drive only. It's a 1985 K100RS with 30,000 miles. I'm not going any farther than this until my Kendon bike lift arrives so I can get the bike up off of my garage floor. These were taken yesterday, Jan 31st. I'm going to finish cleaning them up with a toothbrush, lube them with Staburags and then reassemble everything so I can move my bike.

Cheers,
Tom

Those are some sharp looking splines!
Granted the mileage isn't high, but there were a lot of misdirects, from BMW and others, about how to care for them "back in the day," leading to a many badly worn splines on the early Ks.

OUCH! I couldn’t wait a month for my bike lift to arrive and the rear wheel was already off for tire replacement. It was only a few more minutes to get the rear drive off and put my mind at ease.

Which lift did you go with?

Those are BEAUTIFUL splines! If it were me, I would use a lube with some moly in it. From my personal experience with a number of classic K-bikes and what I perceive as the general consensus among K-bike riders, something like a 60% moly lube mixed with a good, sticky grease like Wurth Sig 3000 says in place and greatly reduces wear. This is the famous formula from Paul Glaves.

Here a link for a moly paste/lube: https://www.beemershop.com/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=TS-60

There are two reasons your splines look that good:

You only have 30,000 miles on the bike.

Your bike is an '85. The '85 and older K100s came with 16 spline driveshafts and final drives. The meatier 16 spline shafts don't seem to wear as much as the newer 20 spline shafts.:dunno
