hardware online

Thanks, Jim. The local Ace is only a few blocks away, and I did look - they have a similar aisle with multiple plastic trays full of fabulously varied fasteners and fittings. But their 6 x 32 machine screws topped out at 2" and they had no threaded rod.

I'm lucky the hardware store in our small town has a large selection of quality fasteners you can buy one piece at a time.
You grab what you need, write the unit price down, then tell the cashier how much each piece costs.

I have a 6" piece of 6 x 32 threaded rod which is long enough, but I have to use a nut on the free end...

Loctite the nut on the free end of the threaded rod. Then use a hacksaw to cut a slot in the end. Instant common head screw. Round off the head diameter with a file if you need it smaller.
