2016 Land of Oz Rally In Atchison, Kansas - “We’re Doing It Again!”

Former Club President
The Land of Oz Rally In Atchison, Kansas - “We’re Doing It Again!”

Those of you who attended last year’s “New Adventures Along the Yellow Brick Road, Land of Oz Rally” already know that we have taken “Kansas Rally” to all new heights. If you did not attend, just ask anyone who did. Get ready, because we’re doing it again!

Yes, we are returning to Warnock Lake Park in Atchison, Kansas, and offering another great rally at a truly affordable price. But we also took the time to ask questions and listen to all the feedback. All the workable comments have been addressed so 2016 will be even better, and even more enjoyable!

Your $35 will get you two nights camping in beautiful Warnock Lake Park, where you will be hard pressed to find a campsite without either shade or a view of the 57 acre lake - most have both. Facilities and services are being expanded. Onsite breakfasts will be available from local Scout Troops, again with a requested small donation. Included meals will feature Friday night Chili until gone and a catered Saturday night “Competition Level” Kansas City Style BBQ. Those looking for options will find many high quality, affordable local restaurants within 4 miles of the rally grounds, many that will be offering special discounts to rally’er. Don’t want to camp? Atchison offers many affordable motels and B&B’s well within commuting range.

History buffs will find many attractions from Pony Express sites and Amelia Earhart history all the way to a Mental Health Museum that brings out the Halloween in all of us. Being the most Haunted Town In Kansas, you will be able to check out Mysteries documented regularly on the History and Travel Channels. For pure Entertainment, along with Field Events by the Field Event Master made famous at this year’s RA Rally, our Peoples Choice Bike Show will be much improved, experience what it is like to be a bee keeper, and near the Emerald City Bonfire you can dance to live music. As an added bonus, come and help Paul and Voni Glaves celebrate their 50th Anniversary!

More self-guided tours along area roads dubbed “the best kept secrets in Kansas” will be offered so that you too can say, “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore!” GS / ADV riders will be provided a GS/ADV pavilion (at the end of an up hill dirt and gravel path) to socialize and tell great tales of conquest from the day’s rides. That said, Back Road Kansas (sponsors of the Flint Hills Stampede) and the GS Giants are being invited to sample a number of novice through expert level off road challenges!

So start making plans for the 2016 History, Mystery and Entertainment Land of Oz Rally, June 3 - 5 at Warnock Lake Park, Atchison, Kansas. Bigger and better, we’re doing it again!

There will be no need to go hungry at Oz!

Taking a page from the Snicker's commercials, we do not want grumpy rally goers so great food will again be a high priority.

Those arriving Friday evening will find our famous "Chili" at Rally Central until it is gone! It has been a favorite for many years, and once it is gone it is gone. Grab a bowl while you set up your campsite, or slip in to one of the many restaurants within a couple of miles of the rally grounds.

Saturday and Sunday morning breakfasts will again be available on site by the local Boy / Girl Scouts. Eggs, pancakes, and bacon / sausage hot off the grill for a minimal donation to their cause. Just like home, breakfast served with a smiling face!

Northeast Kansas has great touring roads, GS/ADV trails, and attractions. Because of that, come for the rides, and have lunch along the way. With our "People's Choice" Bike Show in town and Field events on site, try out one of those great local restaurants (some with special Rally Discounts) or roadside delights along your trek. We will not have meals available onsite for lunch so make the most of what is available in the area.

While you are in the area we want you to sample some of the "World Famous Kansas City BBQ!" Our Saturday evening meal will feature "Competition Level" BBQ from Chuck And Hanks River Shack. A choice of meats and great sides should set up your evening plans for Paula & Voni's 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Emerald City Bonfire, and the live music by one of Kansas City's most popular bands.

24 hour gourmet coffee will again be provided by The Roasterie https://www.theroasterie.com, coffee roasted and brewed with the quality and taste a BMW Motorcycle rider deserves - life's too short to drink nasty coffee!

Like we have been saying, this years "Land of Oz" Rally will be even better than last year - History, Mystery, and Entertainment await you in Atchison, Kansas!

Now that's Kansas City BBQ!

ADV / GS Giants at the "Land of Oz"

ADV / GS is a BMW Tradition! Brett Dempsey, Karen Mans, and Teresa Karaff Rogers are setting up rides for all levels of ADV / GS Riders. From part gravel / pavement all the way through Expert levels there will be a ride for anyone who wants to shed the pavement for an adventure! And don't miss out on the Special GS Giants "hang out" near Rally Central for ADV camaraderie throughout the rally!

And it keeps getting better!

Since the Discovery Channel has designated Atchison as the "Most Haunted Town In Kansas" we will be serving complimentary gourmet coffee around the clock at the rally. What's that got to do with "Haunted" you ask? Ghost Roast Coffee is roasted and ground in a real Haunted House! Ghost Roast.jpg

Land of Oz on Friday

Friday at most Chartered Club rallies is usually dedicated to setting up camp (or moving into a motel) and relaxing from the road. Well, Friday at the "Land of Oz" Rally will be packed with great options: Along with the novice gravel ride to "wear the bee suit" and the "Chili Until It's Gone" dinner, there will be a special "Haunted House" tour at one of Atchison's famous Haunted Houses! What's better than experiencing the mysteries featured on the Discovery and Travel Channels once you are in the "Most Haunted City In Kansas!" So plan on challenging the supernatural as you transition from "every day" to "rally" life. That way you will be truly prepared for Saturday's GS Giant Event, Field Events, Bike Show, Championship Kansas City Bar-B-Q from Chuck & Hanks River Shack, Gourmet "Ghost Roast" Coffee, and the Paul and Voni Glaves' 50th Anniversary Celebration! By Sunday morning you too will be saying, "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore!"

Movie Night!

For most folks, Friday night at a rally consists of kicking back and relaxing around a campfire after your ride and setting up camp. Well, at this year's "Land of Oz" Rally you will have the options of either heading into town for a tour of at least one "Haunted House" (featured on the Travel Channel) by a local Ghost Hunter, or enjoying freshly popped popcorn while watching one of a couple of motorcycle related movies (right now it looks like either "The Worlds Fastest Indian" or "The Long Way Round")!

So prepare yourself for a weekend of History, Mystery, and Entertainment at the best rally value you are likely to find. Warnock Lake, Atchison, Kansas is your destination when following the Yellow Brick Road!

Happenings!

For those of you who might be looking for something different than the usual rally fare, there are a number of great rides around the "Land of Oz" area to consider:

So who says we cannot have something for everyone!

Dang, I can't take June 3 off work. Looks like I'll have to take the turnpike up to Topeka to make up for lost time and get there in time for chili. I was hoping to take state highways up and enjoy the scenery.

Practical route (2 hours, 45 minutes): https://goo.gl/maps/7TCpPzfeu7Q2
Preferred route (4+ hours): https://goo.gl/maps/hX8EC1shnyE2

Any advice for someone who has rarely had their bike above 70 MPH for an extended run (turnpike runs 75 or 80)? Any concerns with running an '03 F650GS at 80 MPH for an hour and a half or so?
